Everything I wish I knew about Tulum, Mexico
1. Getting There
The nearest international airport is Tulum International Airport (TQO), located about 40 minutes away from the city center. From there, you can rent a car, ATV or scotter, or take the bus to reach the center of Tulum. Do not get in a cab, they have no price regulation from the government, and they will charge you insane prices.
I recommend booking your transportation beforehand from the exact transportation provider, not a third-party service like, Expedia. We had a hassle trying to get our car, and the insurance we payed for on Expedia, wasn’t enough because the transportation provider also needed add their own insurance. The whole process was very annoying, and they had an insane deposit prices, but it all made sense we got on the road, and saw how everyone was driving.
I, also, recommend getting a car instead of ATV or scooter. Tulum being an upcoming vacation town, the city center has a lot construction, which causes uneven, bumpy roads, and dust. On another note, the speed bumpers on the road are extremely high and frequent, and if you add the heat to this equation, we were EXTREMELY grateful that we had a car with AC. Also, Mexican drivers are a bit careless about driving rules, and everyone is kinda doing whatever they want, so we were once again grateful, and felt safer to be in a car, and not in a open vehicle.
Absolutely take a very detailed video of the car when you receive it to make sure you wouldn’t have any issues when dropping it off!
