A Week On Italy's Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in Italy — and the world. It's a rocky coastline dotted with charming villages, delicious food and beautiful views. If you're looking for a week-long vacation that will give you plenty to see and do, I've got just the guide for you!

To start off your week long trip, you need to fly into Naples International Airport. From here, you can choose between a bus, train or taxi to Sorrento. The bus is the cheapest option but we personally opted for the train. It's an incredibly scenic journey that will allow you plenty of time to enjoy your surroundings.

We choose to base ourselves in Sorrento for 6 nights. It worked out a lot cheaper than staying in the likes of Positano/Capri. Sorrento is a great base and the locations along the Amalfi Coast are easily accessible from here, making it the perfect place to stay! 

It's hard to go wrong with this hotel. The location is excellent and close enough that you can walk into Sorrento itself. The rooms are large, clean and well-appointed; the staff are friendly and helpful plus they have an amazing rooftop pool where you can watch the sunset with a cocktail. 

Taking a day trip from Sorrento to Capri couldn't be easier. It takes roughly 20 minutes by ferry to reach the island of Capri. From here, jump on a bus to Anacapri where you must do the Monte Solaro chairlift! The chairlift costs €12 return and the views are incredible! 

Tempio Travel offer a great boat tour along the Amalfi Coast called 'Amalfi Coast Exclusive'. It cost €95 per person which included transfers to and from your hotel, unlimited drinks and a small lunch. The tour includes 2 beautiful swimming locations and stops at Amalfi Town and Positano. 

We also took a boat tour to see the beauty of the island from the water. We booked 'Discover the island of Capri by boat' on AirB&B. This cost €50 per person and lasted roughly 2 hours. The price included drinks and snacks. Personally, I think it was worth the money and would highly recommend it. 

Make sure to visit the Blue Grotto when in Capri! The Grotta Azzurra, or the Blue Grotto, is a natural cave located on the Amalfi Coast and has become one of its most popular tourist attractions. The water inside the grotto has a blue colour due to sunlight shining through an opening above it; when you look down into this opening from outside, it gives off an otherworldly glow! 

As the name suggests, Amalfi is the town that gives the name to the area however, it is not just a starting point to visit the coast: Amalfi town is a historical, beautiful town well worth a visit in itself. The duomo dominates the piazza from the top of high steps and has the most beautiful interior.

Positano is a beautiful, little beach town in Italy on the Amalfi Coast, famous for its colourful buildings, excellent restaurants, and picturesque coastline. The beach in Positano is pristine and beautiful! So what better way to spend an afternoon than tanning and swimming on the Amalfi Coast? You can lie out on the beach or grab any of the open beach chairs, which are €10 each.

If you have a car, a day trip to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii are easy to do. If you don't have your own transportation or want to save money on rental cars (and parking), there's an excellent train service between Naples and Sorrento with stops at each destination along the way. Trains run every 30 minutes during peak season and hourly during off-peak months; they take 40 minutes each way between Naples Centrale Station and Sorrento Porta di Massa Station (the latter also serves Amalfi). The fare for this service ranges from about €10-€15 one way depending on how far ahead you purchase tickets in advance (you'll find cheaper fares if buying them closer to departure date). 

P.S: There is absolutely NO shade in Pompeii. I would recommend a good sunhat, a fan and plenty of suncream!

So here it is - my guide for one week on the Amalfi Coast. Once you've been there you'll see why it is one of the most visited regions in the world. With a rich mix of culture, food, history, fashion, glamour and amazing scenery, Italy's Amalfi Coast truly has something for everyone!

The Amalfi Coast is famous for its views, but it is also famous for its food. There are traditional dishes that you can try throughout the region and some of them will be familiar if you've traveled elsewhere in Italy before. Here are some things you should definitely try while on your trip:

* Pane Carasau (crisp bread with local olive oil). This is an easy dish to find anywhere in Italy, but it's especially good here because of how fresh everything is!

* Lemon sorbet. This is delicious!! Lemon sorbet out of an actual frozen lemon?! Yes please.

* Caprese salad. The tomatoes are SO fresh, you'll be eating this for the whole week. 

* Pizza. Ok, this may seem very obvious but the pizza here is on a completely different level. It's not just a meal, it's an experience. 

The Amalfi Coast has plenty of cobbled streets so flat shoes are a good idea, and you might want to bring trainers if you’re planning on hiking. A hat or scarf and sunglasses are useful in summer as there’s not much shade. And pack a refillable water bottle as there are water fountains in most villages where you can top up. But watch how much you pack if you’re staying in Positano as you might have to carry your bags up a lot of steps.
