48 Hours In Venice | Itinerary
If you are like me living in England right now you are probably ready for your next weekend getaway of a full week’s holiday. But what if I told you there was a way to explore Venice without breaking the bank and save your annual leave?
There are a few things you should know about Venice before we get into this blog. One is that there is currently a 5 Euro entry fee each day to get into the city. This is to help the Venetian residents and government try to save Venice from sinking. Another is that the cheapest hotels are off the islands in a region called Mestre. The island is accessed by a bridge, which you can walk across, catch the bus, or hop on the train.
Day 1
06:25 – Your British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Venice Marco Polo Aiport leaves at this time and lands at 09:35. To do as much as possible in 48 hours you’ll need to get the earliest direct flight possible and that just happens to be a British Airways return flight starting at £129 a person.
10:00 – Starting from when you land, your trip begins, you should take a short bus ride to your accommodation in Mestre, after all, we are trying to do this on a budget.
choose from any of these hotels for good value for money and a great location.
And one more for the travellers with a larger budget.
Drop off your bags at the hotel and head onto the Island (make sure to check in advance if bags can be left at the hotel while you’re exploring).
Now, you are probably thinking there is a lot to do. On day 1, you should take the opportunity to explore the Island of Venice, see St Marcs Basicala and let your jaw drop in awe of the Rialto bridge and the chaos of the Grand Canal. This will be your only time to ride a gondola around the narrow canals of Venice, so I suggest you do so. Make sure to try some gelato, visit the shops and eat at a canal-side restaurant.
Now the day is coming to an end make sure to try some gelato, visit the shops and eat at a canal-side restaurant.
Day 2
09:00 – On day 2, it’ll be an early start, unfortunately, due to having a flight to catch at 8 pm. If you don’t pay for breakfast in the hotel you should try a pastry from the island of Venice or a local bakery. Once you cross the bridge into the island of Venice and pay your 5 euro entry fee, hop on a ferry boat to the neighbouring islands of Murano and Burano.
Murano, also known as the Island of Glass, has its canals lined with glass shops, all with different designs, when I visited the island, I bought a glass dolphin and turtle from a shop near the island centre.
In your few hours before heading to the airport, you can take an island tour by boat, the tour through the canals of Murano, Burano and Torcello.
17:30 – Unfortunately, it’s time to head back to the airport where you head from Venice Marco Polo to London Heathrow by British Airways; I recommend just booking a return flight instead of individual flights.
