Five Typical Tuscan Trattoria in Lucca

Five Typical Tuscan Trattoria in Lucca

Ashley LaBoda
I love visiting and supporting new, trendy bars and restaurants but sometimes I just want the classics, done perfectly. These restaurants are not fancy and are not the places to go to if you are looking for a particularly quick meal, but, you will find high-quality food and wine and a lively, local atmosphere. Here are my five favorite places to go when I want a home-cooked Tuscan meal (but do not want to cook it in my home!).

Gigi Trattoria
@ashleyelena
Reliable favorite for menu and vibes. Simple menu, always delicious (for secondi, try the fritto misto!). Good options for gluten-free eaters — there is always a fantastic risotto on the menu and good quality GF pasta. Fun Fact: In 2006, Mark Bittman featured Trattoria Gigi in the NYT!

L'isola Che Non C'era
@ashleyelena
Family-run, always cooking up some good, seasonal specials. Nice wine list featuring local Lucchese wines along with the usual broader-Tuscan suspects. Save room for dessert!

Vecchia Trattoria Buralli
@ashleyelena
Old school trattoria at its best. Menu is often handwritten and in Italian (though they generally have an English version available). Good set lunch menu.

Osteria Baralla
@ashleyelena
Just off the ancient Roman amphitheater, Osteria Baralla offers traditional Tuscan cuisine with atmosphere to match. Order the mixed antipasti plate to start for a good sampling of local favorites. Great place to sit for lunch to break up a day of sightseeing.

Trattoria da Giulio

Lovely trattoria offering traditional Lucchese fare. In the summer they offer cool, shady outdoor seating under fantastic stone arches.
