A bit of context

Georgia, often hailed as the Jewel of the Caucasus, is a captivating country nestled in the heart of the Caucasus region, bridging Eastern Europe and Western Asia. With its breathtaking landscapes, soaring mountain ranges, and a coastline along the Black Sea, Georgia presents a diverse mosaic of natural wonders and cultural treasures. Bordered by Russia to the north, Azerbaijan to the southeast, Armenia to the south, and Turkey to the southwest, Georgia showcases a varied terrain encompassing snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, winding rivers, and sun-kissed beaches.

Across its storied past, Georgia has served as a crossroads of civilizations, with influences from ancient Colchians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Persians, Arabs, Turks, and Russians contributing to its rich tapestry of heritage. The name "Georgia," believed to be derived from the Persian word "Gurgan," meaning "Land of the Wolves," reflects the country's wild and untamed landscapes.

Georgia's history is marked by epochs of independence, cultural exchange, and resilience against foreign domination. The medieval Kingdom of Iberia laid the groundwork for the modern Georgian state, with legendary figures such as Queen Tamar embodying the nation's spirit of strength and sovereignty. The country's rugged geography provided natural defenses, enabling Georgians to withstand invasions from various empires over the centuries. The Battle of Didgori in 1121, where King David IV of Georgia decisively defeated the Seljuk Turks, stands as a testament to Georgia's determination to defend its freedom and identity.

Throughout the ages, Georgia has nurtured a rich cultural heritage, expressed through its unique language, traditions, cuisine, and vibrant arts scene. From the ancient cave cities of Uplistsikhe and Vardzia to the medieval marvels of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, Georgia's cultural landmarks bear witness to its enduring legacy as a cradle of civilization in the Caucasus.
