Porto
Where to stay: Porto River Hotel - this quaint hotel is right on the river in the waterfront quarter called the Ribeira which is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and multi-colored buildings. From there you have easy access to town and Gaia across the bridge!
Day 1:
+ Grab breakfast at Mercador Cafe
+ I always like to start exploring a new city through a free walking tour - typically, the guides do their job because they are passionate about their city and it is a great way to get the lay of the land. I like to use Free Tours by Foot to book.
+ Spend the rest of the day getting lost in the small city... pop by Gazella for Anthony Bourdain's favorite hot dog, stop in Livraria Lello Bookstore that inspired J.K. Rowling when writing Harry Potter (get tickets online in advance), take in the gorgeous tiles at the São Bento Railway Station, and if you are feeling up to it, climb the steps of the Torre dos Clérigos for beautiful views of Porto.
+ Eat as many pasteis de nata as possible - a Portuguese egg custard tart pastry that you can find on just about every corner!
+ Dinner: O Solar de Patio - an absolutely charming outdoor restaurant with a lovely staff and delicious food
