As you may have heard the capital of our country  is well known for the diversity and beauty it possesses. It is full of history, culture, art and a sense of romanticism. As one of the most touristic metropolis in the world I tried to summarize in this guide the places and activities you can’t miss in your trip.

Mexico City is the birthplace of our Mexican culture. Everywhere you go keeps a memory of different events that shaped our history, which is long, complicated, dramatic, but overall, so intriguing and simply fantastic.

A little disclaimer, our history begins thousands of years ago, with the consolidation of different indigenous civilizations, some more powerful than others, but the stories about how they began and lived are just so fascinating.

If this little preface interested you and want to learn more about it, this are the places you should go to:

1. Museo Nacional de Antropología (National Anthropology Museum): It is considered the largest museum in Latin America and one of the most important works of world museography. It has areas specialized in archaeology, ethnography, museography and research, as well as different auditoriums, an extraordinary library, and it also counts with diverse temporary exhibitions.

You can get audio guides or a guided tour in order to make your experience more fulfilling. Last but not least, it counts with a restaurant that offers authentic Mexican dishes, each of them as delicious as the other. If you are an adventurous foodie I highly suggest you go and try this restaurant due that it offers a very wide range of our typical dishes which are very hard to find outside our country (like “mole”, “escamoles”, “grillos”, etc).

2. Museo del Templo Mayor: located just a few block away from the National Anthropology Museum you can find this other one. The Templo Mayor or Great Temple of Mexico was the most important sacred site in Mexico-Tenochtitlan (one of the most important cities due to its impact in our history) and is currently an archaeological zone in the center of Mexico City. There you can find its ruins and (literally) underneath it you can find out more about its history.

3. City of Teotihuacán: to get here you are going to need to get out of Mexico City, but believe me it’s completely worth it. Here you can actually step in  our history; you’ll find some of Mexico’s most important pyramids and temples. Just so you can get and idea of what this place represents, the word “Teotihuacán” means “the city were gods are born”. There are diverse forms of getting here. For example, different tour bus services will get you there, buying tickets from Tourbus is a great option, or you can even Uber there.

HOURS: the place is open everyday from 9am to 3pm.

Moving forward, Mexico City, along the years, has been the home of different artistic and political movements. Here are some places you should stop by in order to get to know them:

1. La Casa Azul: home of one of Mexico’s most famous painters. Some hints: tragic live story, amazingly talented, woman, uni-brow… you got it, right? YES, La Casa Azul was once the house of FRIDA KAHLO! Besides looking at some of her paintings you can stroll down her patio, see the places where she painted, observe different unfinished canvas, and get to know more about her life. Such an enriching experience! Also, it is located in Coyoacán, a quitefamous and beautiful place where you can walk around and look at the very Mexican architecture that is all around the place.

2. El Palacio de Bellas Artes: The Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City is a multifunctional building, which heritage and historical value led it to be declared a national artistic monument  by the Mexican government in 1987. In addition to being the home of important scenic-musical events with its magnificent theater, the Palace of Fine Arts is also custodian of some of the most important mural works of the Mexican artistic movement. It is a collection of 17 pieces of Mexican muralism, distributed throughout the first and second floors, with the works of very important and distinguished muralists such as Rivera, Orozco and Tamayo.

Pro-tip: if you like ballet you should check the "ballet folklórico" which takes place in this theater. Tickets can be bought in the entrance or via ticketmaster.

HOURS: tuesday to sunday from 10 am till 6pm.

3. Museo Soumaya: a relatively new museum in the city that you should totally check out. Everything, from the architecture and structure of the buildng, to the exhibitions inside of it, scream modern art. The museum holds both kinds of exhibitons one is temporary and is more contemporary, while th permanent one is more mexican art focused. 

HOURS: from sunday to friday from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Mexican gastronomy is famous world-wide, so you cannot miss some of the best restaurants of the city in your trip. Here are some of my best recommendations, for all kind of budgets.

Mexico City has an amazing night life which you should totally check out. Either if you love to party or not, we got you covered. Here are some of the places I highly recommend for a night-out:

HOURS: open from tuesday to sunday from 11am to 6pm.

Disclaimer: this is a high demand museum, you should purchase your tickets at least 5 days prior to your visit. You can do so via their web page "Boletos Frida Kahlo"

Disclaimer: for my party people, there is a whole area known for its night life, this place is called "La Roma", along these streets you can find multiple bars and clubs, each with a different theme, music and vibe; so, either if you are a techno enthusiast or want to get into the latino vibe, you should definitely check out this place. However, I would like to share with you my favorite clubs in this area:

1. Antro Juan: this is a high demand night club, with a hypster vibe. Music is a mix of everything, form reaggeton, to techno, to house; however, not the place to be if you are into commercial music, it´s more "alternative".  It is open from thusday to saturdays from 11pm till 4am. The dress code is not strict, so you can go in snickers if your are comfortable with that. Cover is mandatory for everyone, so to get in you will be charged $350MXN.

Disclaimers: drinks are expensive so I recommend you pre-game before. If you are going in a group (say +5 people) you should make a reservation, which you can do via dm (@antro_juan).

2. Supra Rooftop: this is a more high-end place to get drinks, it´s not for "partying hard", but a great place to grab some mixology drinks or even starters and chat with your friends. Prices are a little high, but I think they are worth it. The place is super nice, has an amazing view of the city and the music is real good. 

However, if after a few drinks you are in the party mode, check out their night club, which is located in the same building but opens later.

Disclaimer: entrance is free but if you are going in a larde group, and as it is in a high demand area, you should make a reservation as well (@supraroma). Opens tuesday to friday from 1pm-1am.

3. Departamento: located in the same area this is a night club which only plays house music. Very chill place with great mixology drinks. Entrance fee for everyone is $250MXN.  Opens wednesday and thursday from 6pm-3am and frieday to sunday from 2pm-3am.

4. Salon Solín: great night club, especially if you are into techno music and dancing all night long. This is a more high end place, so you should dress up. Entrance fee of $300MXN for everyone. The place is amazing, I would say my favorite club in the city. Only people +23 are allowed.

1, Café Toscano (polanco): Polanco is the area where it is located, very nice area to walk arounf while you are waiting for your table or after you finished your meal. Café Toscano is an amazing place to brunch, the restaurant is very nice and they serve multiple mexican dishes, I recommend you try their "enfrijoladas" if you are into quesadillas and beans, you will love them! Their prices are fair enough, absolutely not expensive but also not the cheapest place you can go to.

HOURS: Open everyday, brunch is served from 8am to 1pm.

2. Aromas: located in Las Lomas, which is the fanciest area of the city, Aromas is also a very nice place to have brunch at. They serve a variety of dishes from "huevos rancheros" to "avo toasts", prices are higher than other places but if you are the kind of person who loves brunch time, I highly recommend you come here and give it a try. 

HOURS: Open everyday, brunch is served from 8am to 1pm. It is recommended to make a reservation (you can do so via google, just look up the restaurant).

3. El Cardenal: the best place to have a mexican meal (either for breakfast, brunch or dinner). They only serve tradional dishes and they have different locations. Prices are fair (not high, nor low) and all their restaurants have a vey mexican style, from the music playing in the background, to the clothing of waiters and the architecture and decoration of the place overall. Prices are a littble bit high, but food is generously served.

Pro-tip: if you are a coffee lover, order their famous Café de Olla and give it a try.

HOURS: they change according to the reaturant you are going (location).

4. Rosetta: it is run by Elena Reygadas, who just got named the best chef in the world by The World´s 50 Best Restaurants, need I say more. Food is absolutely delicious, and the menu changes everyday. This is a very high-end, high- demand restaurant so prices are high, but in my opinion each dish is completely worth it, it´s a complete gastronomical dream.

HOURS: open monday till saturday from 1pm-5:30pm and 6:30pm-11:30pm.

5. El charco de las ranas: simply the best restaurant tacos you can get in Mexico City. Prices are very affordable and no reservations need to be made in advanced.

HOUR: from sunday to thursday 8:00 am- 0:00, and friday/saturday from 8:00am-2:00am

6. Churrería el Moro: if you a have a sweet tooth you should totally try these churros, you know the deal, covered in sugar and cinnamon, warm, fluffy, everything you dream about, the perfect churro is here.

7. La Casa de Toño: I think I speak for all mexicans when I say this is our favorite fast food chain. You can find all types of mexican typical dishes in huge amounts for a fairly low price. Food quality is amazing and you can either eat in the restaurant or order it for take out.

If you just want a slow day, these are some of the areas you can go to enjoy yourself without any rush

1. Parque de Chapultepec: one of Mexico City´s biggest parks, amazing place to walk around, inside the park you can find different "mercados" which are kind of street market places, something to eat and even different kind of museums and restaurants.

2. Mazaryk: it´s literally our Fifth Avenue, if you are in the shopping mood this is the place you want to go. It is a street filled with the most luxorious brands, also you can find different cafes and restaurants. Make sure to visit Parque Lincoln which is a 5 minute walk from there.

3. Coyoacán: this is the area where La Casa Azul is located (we talked about it in the Museum´s part of this guide). This is a very typical place and very touristic.

4. Mercado del Carmen: my suggestion is you here on a Sunday so you can get the full experience, very chill place to have lunch or just grab some drinks with friends. On Sunday morning a bunch of painters go there to sell their art.

5. La Mexicana: this is one of Mexico City´s most famous park, it is not that large, but is filled with a bunch of restaurants and the views are amazing, Great place to take your dog for a walk.

I hope this recommendations can make your trip to Mexico City more enjoyable and easier. This city truly never sleeps and they are a bunch of activities to do and places to visit, but I think the ones in this guide are the most worthy.
