Highlights of Japan - One Week Detailed Itinerary
Day One - Arrival in Tokyo
My flight into Haneda Airport arrived at 1pm local time.
Getting through border control and customs was super easy and efficient. Once I got to the arrival terminal, I went to the currency exchange booth to get some yen.
After some research, I opted to get a Suica Card instead of a JR Pass for my time in Japan. A Suica Card essentially works like a metro card. It's a prepaid card that you use for trains and buses in Tokyo and Kyoto. So before I left the airport, I went to the train ticket booth. I bought a Suica Card and loaded 2,000 yen onto it. I also bought roundtrip bullet train (Shinkansen) tickets to Kyoto, and roundtrip train tickets to Mount Fuji.
Once I finished getting all of those details in order, I caught the train from Haneda Airport to Shibuya Station. As soon as you step off the train, you're thrown into the hub of Tokyo! You're immediately met with the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and nothing prepares you for the sheer number of people in the streets. It was incredible and really had me diving headfirst into Tokyo!
Next I headed to my hotel for the night to check in and drop off my bag!
I opted for a capsule hotel for night one, and it was the best decision ever! It was a cool experience from start to finish. It was only a couple minutes' walk from Shibuya Square, so the location was perfect. I didn't spend a ton of time in the hotel, but I noticed a lot of the guests hanging out in the common area. So if you're looking to meet other solo travelers, it's a great opportunity for that!
