Did you know that once these colorful villages and their buildings were painted in grey to keep a low profile and hide from pirates. Later on when that danger disappeared they painted them in different bright colors so fishermans could find their way back home easier. That was were useful during cloudy and gray days when it would be hard to spot the village.

Day 1

Depending on whether you are coming from west or east you can visit some other city on your way to Cinque Terre.

On day 1 I visited Florence as I was coming from East. Also you can visit Ferrara, Venice, Bologna, Padua, Parma. But I would recommend you to focus on your final destination and to not lose a lot of time. If you decide to visit other cities on first day I would recommend to visit only one because that way you will still get to final destination in reasonable hour and you will also have enough time to explore that city. I woke up around 5am and started my journey around 6am. I was in Florence by 12pm, and was there for 2 hours.

So whether you are going by car, bus or plane your final destination for first day is La Spezia.

I recommend you to book your accomodation in La Spezia(or Lerici and Levanto) because this small city is very well connencted with Cinque Terre villages. Also prices of accommodations are much lower then in Cinque Terre villages. I will leave you my recommendations for accommodation.
