About Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is one of the most famous Swiss Alpine villages!

Also famous is the 300m high Staubbach Fall and the glaciers and mountains nearby.

No matter if you're visiting in summer or winter - there's always something to do. From hiking to skiing or sledding.

Getting there

By Airplane

You will most likely fly into Zurich or Bern and make your journey to Lauterbrunnen from there by car or train.

By Train

You can catch the train from Zurich which also stops in Lucern or Bern.

Both journeys require you to switch trains in Interlaken.

Zurich to Lauterbrunnen takes 2.5 hours.

Bern to Lauterbrunnen takes 1.5 hours.

Both routes offer an amazing scenery the whole time.

By Car

Lauterbrunnen can be reached by car in 2 hours from Zurich and 1 hour from Bern.

Parking

There is a multi-story parking garage directly below Lauterbrunnen train station. Alternatively, you can use the parking lot at Lauterbrunnen Church.

This walk take approx. 1 hour - 30 minutes of walking plus additional time for enjoying the views and taking pictures.

Surrounding Sights

Staubbachfall

This waterfall is the signature waterfall of the region. The Staubbach Fall is one of the 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley and is 297 meters high. The waterfall is the third highest in Switzerland and among the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe.

Visitors can get up close thanks to a viewing platform built into the mountain but be aware that you will get wet. The walk is steep and takes approx. 15 minutes. The viewing platform is only open from June to October.

Trümmelbach falls

Trümmelbach falls can be reached via a 45-minute walk from town or by a short bus ride.

Ten glacier waterfalls have carved corkscrew channels through the stone walls. Inside the mountain, up to 20,000L of water per second rushes through. 

They are open daily from April to November.

Each night during high season, Staubbach Falls are illuminated, creating a magical effect.

Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe

You can take the cable car up the mountain to visit Jungfraujoch at 3454 meters.

Here you can find Europes highest railway station and post office. The journey to the top takes around 90 minutes.

There is plenty to do at Jungfraujoch e.g. visiting the Ice Palace and enjoy the view over the Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding alps.

There's also a Snow Park where you can try snow tubing, sledding or skiing and snowboarding.

Schilthorn Birg

Other mountains that can be visited by cable cars e.g. Schilthorn. Right next to the outdoor terrace, you can find a skyline walk with a clear floor built over a vertical drop.

And Thrill Walk is a 200 meter long cliff pathway built into the side of the mountain.

Grindelwald Gletscherschlucht

The "Gletscherschlucht" near Grindelwald is a narrow glacier gorge running through 300 meter high rock walls.

The Gorge is divided into diverse themes such as geology, glaciers, water, myths and is easy to access and in all weathers!

Inside the gorge, there is a huge 170m² “spiderweb” net stretched across the gorge where you can jump around.

For an extra fee, you can do the crazy “canyon swing” where you freewall from 90m above the canyon and swing up to 120km/h through the canyon.

Open daily from 9:30am to 6pm or on Fridays even until 10pm. But it is only open approx. from May through November.

Entry fee is for kids from 6 up to 16 years 10 CHF and for adults 19 CHF. The whole round tour is 1 kilometer long and takes approx. 1-2 hours
