The Best Of Slovenia In One Week
Take A Trip To Slovenia
Best Time Of Year
For this itinerary, the best time to visit is either during summer or fall (so the months of June - early October). Weather will be a huge factor here as you’re hiking, so you will want warm summer months to be comfortable. However, in the fall before the snow falls, the colours will make the hiking and driving views incredible so that’s another great time to visit. During fall you will likely enjoy the lakes a little less as you won’t be swimming (unless you love a good polar plunge!).
Besides Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled, the remainder of Slovenia didn’t feel touristy or busy - but we have a feeling tourism in Slovenia will be on the rise in the coming years. Trying to avoid summer holidays (usually end June - August) isn’t a bad idea if you’re looking to miss the crowds. Another point is that, in Europe, weekend travels are more common so avoiding hot spots such as the lakes on the weekends (and being aware of long weekend holidays) will make for less crowds.
Arriving In Slovenia
Arrival notes depend on your adaptation of this itinerary, where you’re coming from, and how you’re getting there. We personally combined this itinerary with another week in Croatia and therefore flew into Zagreb, Croatia (which was cheaper than Slovenia). However you could be starting in Slovenia (the international airport is in Ljubljana) or driving from another country (Italy and Austria are another two close countries). Either way, make sure to have your passport on you. As EU member countries, the border between Croatia, Austria, Italy, and Slovenia is open and there is no border control - but they could still ask for your passport at any time. Make sure your rental car is also approved by the rental company for multi-country travelling if you are doing this!
