How to spend a weekend in Bilbao
When is the best time to visit Bilbao?
The best time to visit Bilbao is during the summer season, from June to mid-September, when the weather is warm and lively. That said, spring and autumn, if you’re lucky with the weather, can be even better—cooler days, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed vibe.
Plus, who wants to spend all day walking the city under the hot sun when you could be exploring the beautiful beaches of the Basque Country?
Pro tip: always check the forecast before your trip, and don’t forget to pack an umbrella—unexpected rain showers are part of the charm.
Cafe Iruña
Start your morning with a coffee at Café Iruña, a historic gem located in the heart of Bilbao.
Guggenheim Museum
After your coffee, head to the Guggenheim Museum. More than just a museum, it’s an iconic symbol of Bilbao’s transformation and a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Inside, you’ll find a mix of permanent and rotating exhibitions showcasing modern and contemporary art.
💸 Price: 15 EUR
Puppy
Located outside the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, this giant puppy was created by Jeff Koons in 1992. The flowers that fill the stainless steel structure are changed each season.
Bar El Globo
A must-visit pintxo bar. The bar is known for its creative and delicious pintxos*. Try the “Txangurro” (spider crab) or the “Patata con trufa” (potato and truffle gratin). Pair them with a glass of txakoli, the local white wine, for the full experience.
Pintxos are small plates of food that are often served on small pieces of bread or toothpicks, and are typically eaten in bars or taverns. The name "pintxo" comes from the Spanish verb pinchar, which means "to pierce".
Funicular de Artxanda
Take a 15-minute walk to the Plaza del Funicular and board the Artxanda funicular. This quick ride brings you to one of Bilbao’s best panoramic viewpoints, where you’ll have views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
💸 Price: A round trip costs 4.30 EUR, and it’s free for kids.
Casco Viejo
No trip to Bilbao is complete without walking through the historic Casco Viejo. These narrow streets are full of character, local shops, and traditional bars. Be careful with your belongings, especially at night, as Bilbao is increasingly popular—sometimes for the wrong reasons, much like Barcelona.
Plaza Nueva
Located in the heart of the old town, Plaza Nueva is the typical main square that every Spanish city has—like Plaza Mayor in Madrid or Plaza de la Constitución in San Sebastián.
Plaza Nueva is a lively gathering spot where you can enjoy pintxos, grab a drink, and people-watching. On Sundays, the square comes alive as families bring their children to trade collectible cards.
Mercado La Ribera
Mercado de la Ribera offers an array of fresh produce, seafood, and countless pintxos stalls. Grab a plate of your favorite pintxos and enjoy them with a refreshing glass of vermut.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
A Game of Thrones fan’s dream and an unforgettable day trip. Located 40 minutes by car from Bilbao. Entry is free, but booking a time slot in advance is required.

Mount Pagasarri
Pagasarri is easily the most popular hike in Bilbao. It is accessible from the city centre and offers incredible views. This semi-challenging adventure will you leave feeling satisfied. The climb to Pagasarri is the one hike that every outdoorsy person that steps foot in Bilbao must do.

Puente Colgante
This 19th-century architectural marvel, located in Getxo, is one of the world’s largest transporter bridges. For a small fee, you can ride the gondola across the river. Or you can even climb the top of the bridge and see entire mouth of the Nervión River and the Port of Bilbao for only 10 EUR.

Sopelana Beach
Just a metro ride from the city, Sopelana Beach is a favorite among surfers. With its golden sands and rolling waves, it’s the perfect spot for surfing lessons or a relaxing swim. The surrounding cliffs also offer picturesque trails for sunset walks.
Plentzia
End your weekend with a visit to Plentzia, one of my favorite coastal towns. Take a relaxing walk along the beach, enjoy the fresh sea air, and stop by a local bar for some pintxos.
I hope this guide helps you create unforgettable memories during your weekend in Bilbao.
