Road to Hana (Maui, HI)

This is a comprehensive guide with viewpoints, pit stops, and parking recommendation for your journey to Hana. It's definitely not as scary as people make it seem, and worth renting a car and driving by the coast yourself to take the necessary time. This guide follow Highway 360, so you are not taking the "backway". It is ideal to take at least 2 to 3 days to see and hike everything along the way. The guide is organized by by the route, with more details on Hana, Wainapanapa and Kipahulu. This guide includes: mapped stops along Road to Hana, hotel recommendations, food recommendations, activities and hiking recommendations, and reservations links. The Road to Hana is a long, windy stretch along the southeast coast of Maui, connecting Kahului (where the OGG airport is) to the little town of Hana. This road can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to drive, depending on how many stops and how the traffic is on the way there and back, The 64.4 mile road can be narrow, with many parts and bridge between being only yield only. However difficult it sounds, it is well worth the trek to see the breathtaking views, amazing waterfalls, and even try swimming in a few!

Before you start:

• Decide how long you want to spend on the Road to Hana. If you want to attempt hikes and make reservations for the parks, you may want to look into spending at least a night in Hana to give yourself ample time for energy.

• Weather can be erratic and change every hour. Dress appropriately and bring a change of clothes if need. Be mindful that roads and hikes are SLIPPERY after the rain.

• Make your reservations before hand, especially if you want to see the Black Sand Beach.

• Make your maps available offline, as cellular service is VERY spotty.

• Bring cash because there will be many local stalls on the way you can stop at and not all stalls take credit card.

Start here. You should fill up on gas and snacks while in town. This is where the Costco, Target, Walmart, 7-Eleven, etc., is.
