A brief look at Easter Island's history

Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is a remote Polynesian island in the Pacific Ocean. Settled by Polynesian voyagers around 800-1200 AD, it developed a unique culture centered around the construction of massive stone statues called Moai. By the 16th century, overpopulation and resource depletion led to societal decline. European contact in 1722 brought diseases and slave raids, further devastating the population. In the 19th century, Chile annexed the island, becoming its territory. Efforts to preserve Rapa Nui's cultural heritage led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Ahu Vinapu, one of its archaeological sites, features precise stonework, sparking debates about potential connections with the Inca civilization. Today, Easter Island is home to a small population of Polynesians who work to preserve their cultural traditions. Tourism has become a significant economic driver, attracting visitors from around the world to witness the island's Moai statues and experience its unique history and culture.

Weather & best time to travel to Easter Island 🌤️

The best time to travel to Easter Island is during the shoulder seasons of April to May or September to November when the weather is pleasant, and crowds are fewer. If you prefer warmer temperatures and don't mind larger crowds, consider visiting during the high season from late December to March. The low season from June to August offers budget-friendly options but comes with cooler weather and occasional rain.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Welcome to my travel shop. 👋🏻 I'm Lena, originally from Germany but have called California, Mallorca (Spain), and Chile temporary homes over the years. When I don't travel, I like to spend my time with landscape photography, digital product design, baking, and drinking overpriced coffee. My goal here on Thatch is to offer you more than travel guidance. I'm dedicated to bringing value to your future trips by sharing my carefully curated itineraries, expert tips, and, most importantly, the priceless locals' perspective. Why should you work with me? Because I've lived it. I've walked the cobblestone streets of Valldemossa, Spain, set out to find the best cardamom bun in Copenhagen, and hiked the W-Trek in Torres del Paine, Patagonia. Because I've made mistakes, taken detours, and found hidden gems. I've learned from every step of my journey, and I'm here to share those lessons with you. Love, Lena P.S. I highly encourage others to use her guide if you plan on taking a trip to Europe." - Sue "The Portugal/ Spain trip could not have been planned any more perfectly for two old guys like Stuart and I who have no travel experience at all. Every place you picked for us was magnificent. I am sure no one else would have put such love, care and attention to detail for such a trip." - Arthur
