Costa Rica | Itinerary for Gunacaste  

Welcome to the western coast of Costa Rica! In this itinerary you will get to explore the unique resort town of Las Catalinas, the surfer town of Tamarindo & much more! 

Fly into Liberia Airport & pick up rental car. Drive one hour to reach the resort town of Las Catalinas. 

Pick up some groceries & snacks and settle in to your hotel/ vacation rental. 

Explore Playa Danita (the beach) and have a relaxing dinner at the local brewery. 

I recommend to stay in Las Catalinas as your base. It has a resort town feel but still has the local beaches to explore. 

Have an easy morning with brunch right in town. Then get ready for a bit of adventure with a visit to nature/animal sanctuary and zipline! 

Wake up a bit early to drive an hour south to Tamorindo. Have breakfast before a day of exploring beaches, like the black sand beach, and surfing! 

Start your day with fresh juice and pastries at the Bakery. Then cross off a bucket list item of horseback riding on the beach! End your day relaxing at your local beach and have dinner at the beautiful La Pampa Grill. 

Start your day with a morning hike, morning yoga class or meditation session or spend it at the beach club. For the afternoon continue the relaxation by the beach or have some excitment with an ATV tour! End your evening with dinner at the fine dining restaurant at Casa Chameleon. 

Today you will get out on the water on a catameran & snorkel tour! After you can Playa de Coco and have dinner either at  or back in Las Catalinas. 

Sadly today it is time to pack up and head to the aiport for flight home. Arrange a transfer with your consierge or take the one hour drive back

You can rent a car to explore the area. Or if you are staying in Las Catalinas at the hotel or condo you can arrange transportation with the consierge. 

The app “Waze” is the best app to use for Costa Rica for directions and maps. 

Spanish is the offical language here but English is also widley spoken. Pura Vida! 

Costa Rica is no longer a “budget” destination. It has risen in popularity with tourism and its prices now reflect that 

This part of Costa Rica has that jungle vibe which means to expect some rain. The dry season is from December to February. I recommend middle of January to get some extra daylight to explore. 

Cool down at your hotels pool or head back to the beach for rest of the afternoon. Have a causal dinner at one of the local options nearby 

Service in restaurants is slower than we are used to in the US but the locals are so friendly and love to chat and get to know you! 

Also it’s preferable to tip in cash. Around 10 percent is perfect. 

The roads are less developed and can be quite bumpy and there are no stops signs so just be careful and drive more confidently. I also STRONGLY recommend to get a 4 wheel drive car with high clearance. 

Costa Rica also does not have any addresses so use google maps or waze for general directions. 

Pura Vida! - the local saying that can mean “hello” and “thank you” 

I suggest packing a few exta outfits and swimsuits because of the humidity you start to feel sticky and want to change clothes more often. 

Tevas are perfect for exploring the beaches, sun hat a raincoat and light weight clothing are also necessary!
