24 hours in Iceland --

When it comes to having a long layover in Iceland there are a few things to keep in mind. Icelandair has a lot of options for a longer layover if your destination is in Europe or North America. It's a great point in the middle(ish) to break up those longer flights.

I only recommend leaving the airport if you have a layover of 6 hours or more. You need to make sure you have time to go through customs, get bags, etc. And also have time to come back through security when coming back. Obviously, the less time you have the less you will be able to do.

If you have 20-24 hours, I honestly recommend renting a car for the day. Iceland in general is expensive. When looking at shuttles or ubers it was basically the same amount of money for one trip to Reykjavik as it was to rent a car for the whole day. This way you can pack a lot in if you want to and have some flexibility. I have a lot of things listed, if you want to enjoy each place you can't do them all but you can pick and choose based on your interests!
