How does it work?
Pick your own farms are local farms that grow a variety of fruits and veggies suitable for picking. Popular choices include cherries, berry varieties, plums, apples, pumpkins, sweet corn, or flowers like dahlias and sunflowers.
Farmers cultivate the crop until they reach the perfect ripeness for picking. Sometimes factors like a wet season or late summer can affect the growth or abundance of the crop, but often there is enough of a variety of fruit to enjoy a fun day out.
1. Plan your visit. Farms often have updates on their website or social media feeds to show what is available for picking.
2. Visit the farm. Some farms require advanced booking or selecting a specific time slot. All farms have an entry fee, which will be taken off the cost of the produce you pick.
3. Explore the fields. Wander through the fields, selecting the fruit and veggies that you want.
4. Picking. Carefully pick the fruit you want, making sure they are ripe and undamaged. Most summer fruits from the farms don’t have a long shelf life, so only pick what you think you can finish.
5. Weigh and pay. At the end of your picking session, your produce is weighed and you pay for what you have picked.
6. Enjoy the fruits of your labour - fresh produce picked just a few hours before eating!
The fruit and veggie PYO farms do not allow dogs on the fields. However, flower farms like The Flower Plot and pumpkin farms like Tulleys welcome well-behaved dogs on leads.
Garson Farm Pick Your Own
@anniekatt
Garson Farm is one of the largest, and more popular, PYO farms in the UK. They have a huge variety of fruits, veggies and flowers, ready to be picked from June to October.
To visit the farm, you will need to purchase a Farm Pass online. It is best to book at least a week in advance, especially during the peak season such as when strawberries, cherries and pumpkins are ready for picking. When booking, you select the date and time slot for entry. Once you are in, you can spend as much time as you like in the farm, but you will find 2-3 hours is enough.
Because of the size of the farm, visitors drive from field to field to pick the produce they want. After you are done, pay for the produce at the exit tills and the cost of the Farm Pass is taken from the total bill.
Alongside the PYO, the Garden Centre has a vast selection of plants and homeware.
The Farm Shop has a huge range of fresh produce and products from local makers in the nearby counties.
The Orangery Tea House is a stunning glass building with views of the surrounding views. They serve breakfast, brunch and lunch, along with a good selection of kid-friendly options.
