Day 1
Arrive on Hawaii Island
🛬 Land on the Big Island
There are two main airports located on opposite sides of the Big Island: Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport.
Our recommended airport on the Big Island is Kona (KOA) since it's closer to the major resort areas and has more flight options from the neighbor islands and the mainland. Unless you plan to stay in Hilo it is not advisable to fly into this airport as it's on the other side of the island and not close to the major resort areas.

The best way to get to your hotel and around the island is by car. You won't need a 4x4 or any special features for the activities outlined below, so just pick the best sized car for your party.
🧳Check into your hotel
There is an overwhelming number of lodging options on the Big Island. Where you stay can make or break the experience. Unfortunately, in many cases, the online photos don't live up to reality. Rest easy knowing that we inspect the hotels we recommend and pick the best locations, so you never have to worry.

Beach Day - Ease into the time change with a relaxing day on the beach.
Pack a beach bag and drive in your rental car to Hapuna beach to spend the day soaking in the gorgeous views crystal clear water.
Hapuna Beach is one of the best beaches on the Big Island for swimming. This 1/2 mile white sand beach is regularly voted among the ‘best beaches in the world’.
There is a wide (in the summer months up to 200 ft) white sand beach that slopes gradually into the ocean – perfect for playing in the waves. On the north and south side of the beach are good snorkeling spots around the rocks.
There is also a large beach park with restrooms, showers, picnic tables, snorkel rental, BBQ, and food concession stands.

Day 3
Experience Hawaii Agriculture
The rich volcanic sand on the Big Island and the wide variety of climate zones allows for a range of successful farms on the island, including macadamia nuts, orchids, honey, and the world-famous Kona coffee.
Visit these farms to learn more about agriculture in Hawaii and how these farms operate, and you'll get to enjoy some awesome samples of freshly-grown produce!
The famous snorkeling spot at Honaunau bay is called Paeʻa, and is also known as “Two Step”.
Honaunau Bay is often referred to as the “City of Refuge” after the Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historic Park (also known as – you guessed it – the City of Refuge). The Travel Channel named Honaunau Bay one of “America’s Best Beaches 2004”. A big reason for this is that due to a very advantageous layout of the bay, the water is almost always calm and the waters have exceptional visibility most of the year.
This spot is often rated the second best place on the Big Island for snorkeling after Captain Cook. The waters are usually clear and the average depth is about 20ft. Often you can see pods of dolphins swimming close to shore. There is a very easy place to enter the water called Paeʻa or “Two Step”. It is at the end of a finger of lava and easy to find because you will see lots of people getting in and out of the water.
In our opinion, this spot is better for snorkeling than Captain Cook which gets all the tourist boat traffic.

Day 5
Hilo & Volcanoes
Today you'll head to the east side of the island for two nights to explore the volcano and waterfalls. This helps avoid a long 12-hour day trip from Kona. And you'll have more time to explore totally different scenery and ecosystems. Insider tip: Pack an overnight bag and leave your larger luggage with the bellhop for your return a couple of days later. There is no need to tote everything to Hilo.
East Side Options
💡 Tap into each hotel card for our insights & a booking link.
It's important to note that the lodging options on the east side of Hawaii Island are basic and don't compare to where you stayed in Kona. Think of it as a place to lay your head at night while you spend your days exploring the area. If you prefer not to pack and unpack, you can opt for a full-day tour from Kona. Just plan on 10-12 hours round trip.

In Room Dining
We have the remedy for a long day hiking through the rainforest. Enjoy at your convenience room service that offers specialty pizza delivery, healthy local juices, and ice-cold drinks.
Explore the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Our favorite way to do this is to stay into the evening with a guide and watch the orange glow from molten lava within the Kilauea caldera against the beauty of the starry evening sky, a sight only visible when the volcano is actively erupting.
The nature of the volcano is unpredictable and the lava conditions change daily. Be sure to check out the lava update link I provided to get the latest forecast.

Insider tip: stay into the evening to view the lava glow after the sun goes down.
Take advantage of being on this side of the island, and explore the local culture of Hilo.
Farmers Market
Be sure to check out the Hilo Farmers Market, with colorful, exotic wares. The market is now open seven days a week from 7am - 3pm, with "big market days" on Wednesdays and Saturdays featuring more vendors.
Located in Downtown Hilo, the festive Hilo’s Farmers Market is known as one of the best open markets in Hawaii. You can never tell what you’ll find at this colorful market, but it’s safe to say you’ll probably spot things you'd never find anywhere else — including locally grown and roasted coffee, exotic tropical fruit, and sweet treats like butter mochi.
The Hilo Farmers Market lures both locals and visitors with Hilo’s freshest finds at affordable prices. You’ll find a colorful selection of locally grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, island jams and jellies, macadamia nuts, and delectable baked goods. Also, note that 95 percent of Hawaiian papayas are grown on the east side of the island of Hawaii, so look for these fresh fruits when they’re in season. Strawberry papayas, a local delicacy, look like regular papayas, but their beautiful pinkish-orange flesh is sweeter and juicier.
Food is only part of the fun at the Hilo Farmers Market. Big buckets of orchids and anthuriums line the stalls. Wind chimes, etched glass, and koa wood treasures fill the craft section. You can even find local t-shirts, tropical fashions, and handmade jewelry. And don’t forget to buy a lei for that someone special. Get there early to shop for the best choices from the market’s more than 200 vendors.

Waterfalls
The arid, volcanic landscape of the west side of the Big Island exists in contrast to the lush, green eastern side, where waterfalls plunge off sea cliffs and flow through lush valleys. See famous waterfalls such as stunning Rainbow Falls, majestic Akaka, or towering Hiilawe.
Waianuenue, Rainbow Falls, is a 80 foot tall waterfall that is part of the Wailuku River. Located just outside Hilo Town, the falls are a popular tourist attraction that gets its name from the commonly-seen rainbows appearing during sunny days in the mist just under the waterfall. The falls flows over a natural lava cave said to be the mythical home of Hina, a Hawaiian moon goddess.
