Travel to Albania

Julia K
Albania is my recent discovery, I spent the entire June 2023 in the country and happy to share all my findings and information about this beautiful destination, based on my personal experiences and local insights. It's one of these countries you have to visit now before it becomes a popular expensive mainstream.

WHY ALBANIA?

Albania is currently the most underrated country in European continent. It has some criminal and brutal reputation from the past, which has nothing to do with the current reality. It’s beautiful, quickly developing and welcoming country, offering diverse landscapes and experiences, that you could easily fall in love with. I did, so I offer my help into developing itineraries for you to discover hidden gems and have exceptional dining opportunities. The information you can find in Google is not 100% accurate, and sometimes outdated when it comes to roads and restaurants.

IS IT SAFE?

The short answer is yes. The long is - 100% safe.

WHAT’S THE BUDGET?

It’s one of the most affordable countries in the area. The average budget is €60 – 150 per person per day, all included (food, accommodation, transportation, activities). However, if you wish to have more luxurious experience, the sky is the limit, although I am not sure how the prices of extremely expensive hotels correspond to the quality.

DO YOU NEED CASH?

Yes, always. The country is not really card friendly, 70% of places and hotels do not accept cards. Euros are widely accepted as well. The official currency is LEK.

WHAT ABOUT KIDS?

Albania is very kids friendly, and even if it’s not directly mentioned at the hotel, they will make an effort to find a baby cot and accommodate the kids need. Hiking activities usually would imply no kids, but most of other activities are open to kids of all ages. There are few non challenging hikes in Theth that could be done for 4+ years old, and also by parents with carrier. If you are travelling with kids I strongly recommend to hire a car, as public transport is not suitable for strollers for European standards. In my itinerary, I mention different activities suitability for kids.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO GO?

May-June and September-October. It’s enormously hot in July and August, and prices are higher than usual. However, if that’s your only option due to school vacations, I would not reject it.

WHAT ABOUT VEGETERIAN OPTIONS?

Albanian menus are not designed for vegetarians, but you can find some ways around it. If you eat seafood, most of restaurants along the coast offer seafood pastas and risottos. However, in the farms and guest houses in the mountains would be challenging (but not impossible) to find mains that do not include meat. Anyways, potatoes, spinach cheese pies and salads are always an option.
