Wineries of Cape Town and beyond
There are so many wineries in the Western Cape that are a must visit. Amazing wine, incredible views and scrumptious food. Here is a list of some of my favourite wineries.
Short on time, why not go for a tour around the best winelands in the Western Cape:
If you're staying in Cape Town and want to visit Frankschoek and do the famous wine tram then this is one of the cheapest ways to do it. Don't worry about driving and get your transfer and ticket to the wine tram below. They offer multiple routes, look out for our blog on the wine tram routes, on help to decide which to go on.
Cape Town
1. Constantia Glen
Beautiful location, with a lovely lawn and outside area to enjoy your wine tasting. Located at the bottom of Table mountain range this is an incredible place to spend a sunny afternoon.
2. Steenberg
Winery that does a very special bubbly tasting. Views across the ponds outside are lovely and a great setting to taste your MCCs. Great for a special occasion.
3. Eagles Nest
Set in the woods, this place is highlight recommended for platers, so why not makes this your lunch spot for a day explore the wineries of Cape Town.
4. Buitenverwachting
Lovely secluded winery with some incredibly cheap wine. You can also chose which wines you want to include in your wine tasting, you can taste 5 wines for R100.
5. Cape Point Vineyard
Over the summer months in Cape Town they have a weekly market that is full of food and stalls, as well as wine! They also do picnics so you book a delicious meal enjoying the sun either on their lawn or by the dam.
Stellenbosch
Want to experience some of the incredible wineries that Stellenbosch has to offer? The new way to experience wineries in Stellenbosch and Stellenbosch's answer to the wine tram, the wine TRACTOR. Check it out here:
1. Warwick
Gorgeous wines! Not the prettiest winery but just means that all the focus is on the wines and oh my the wines! A lot of bottles were bought from this place.
2. The Wine Glass
In the middle of the town this is a great place to visit for a wine tasting. They sources their wines from the local area meaning you can do wine tasting from the whole region. You can chose from a whole list of different tastings, such as choosing to sample different Sauvignon Blancs from the region. A great place to start if you don't know which wineries to visit.
3. Waterford Estate
Beautiful estate with such lovely wines. Lovely courtyard to spend an afternoon in, also cosy with fireplaces so great for a rainy day.
4. Remhoogte Wine Estate
Amazing setting, with a tasting room overlooking a small lake and grass land area with antelope and zebras! Not only do you get a great view when tasting their delicious wine, the flatbreads they do are incredible, I still think about their flatbreads!
5. Peter Falke
One of the only wineries that we would find that was open late, when I say late I mean about 7pm. So if you're looking for an evening wine tasting this is your best bet. Beautiful outside area and the platters that they do are also delicious.
6. Stark-Conde
Incredibly beautiful setting, with their tasting room in the middle of a lake surrounded by mountains of the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. The Postcard cafe is also at the winery with is a lovely place for brunch, in this beautiful setting.
Franschhoek
The Franschhoek wine tram is an obvious must do, use this link below for both tram tickets and transport from Cape Town to the wine tram.
1. Anura
2. Boschendal
Lovely estate with multiple different areas. Also has some beautiful accommodation. There's a Friday night market that is full of stalls, food and wine, you need to get tickets but it is free.
3. Franschhoek cellar
Some very different pairings at this place. Popcorn and wine pairing did you say ... yes please! They also do some great food and pizzas. If doing the wine tram I would definitely recommend a route that finishes here as it is only a short walk from the town, so no need worrying about having to get the last tram back to the station (it's just around the corner).
4. TukTuk micro brewery
Need a change from wine - why not check out this microbrewery in Franschhoek.
Hermanus
I only have been to 1 winery in this area... so far but definitely thought it was worth a mention as it was beautiful, and the wine and cheese pairing was just bliss.
1. Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
Incredible setting over the water, surrounded by mountains. Perfect as a stop off on the way to Hermanus.
Why not team up this winery with a whale watching trip, this is what we did and it made for an incredible day!
