Breakfast & Coffee

VAN DYCK Espressobar
@meganarzbaecher
Van Dyck is my favorite espresso in Cologne. All of the espresso is smooth with robust flavors and delicate precision. Their style is clean minimalist, but don’t let the stark aesthetic turn you off. Their staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They can give you suggestions or tips, especially if you are buying beans to use at home.

Kaffeesaurus
@meganarzbaecher
The crowd at Kaffeesaurus always has buzzy energy with a good mixture of people working remotely (thanks to the consistently fast wifi) and people gathering with friends or colleagues. In addition to good coffee, the food and breakfast menu here really shines. There is an assortment of healthy options like smoothie bowls and vegan scambles, as well as decadent selections like the pancakes or t-Rex burrito.

Café Rotkehlchen (Ehrenfeld)
@meganarzbaecher
For a sweet breakfast that is well suited for vegan and allergen eating, look no further than Rotkehlchen. Somewhere between a coffee shop and a European cafe, Rotkehlchen’s menu features a number of baked goods, pies and cakes, as well as a rotating selection of daily specials, salads and sandwiches. There are three locations around Cologne, each cuter than the last.

einbrand – Café der Rösterei Südstadt
@meganarzbaecher
This was the first coffee shop that I fell in love with in Cologne. Their staff is THE NICEST, truly kind people. This is definitely a neighborhood spot, full of regulars. The cafe is small and narrow, but I find their coffee good quality without any pretentiousness.

Die Mehlwerkstatt
@meganarzbaecher
Part coffee shop, part bakery, part airy cafe, Die Mehlwerkstatt is a great place to grab a quick bite with friends before wandering around Ehrenfeld, one of Cologne’s coolest neighborhoods. The bright white minimalist interior is chic and feels perfectly European modern. The baked goods are exceptional, ranging from savory buns and croissants, to sweet rolls and pastry treats.
