How to become a solo traveller 

Welcome to my guide to becoming a female solo traveller! 

I started solo travelling because I was tired of asking my boyfriend and friends to go on holiday and them making excuses as to why they couldn’t.

It’s time to dive in the deep end and book your first solo trip! 

This guide will walk you through my tips I’ve learnt after 8 solo trips.

• Stay at hostels - this saves money on expensive hotels and double beds that you won’t be sharing and is far less lonely than staying at hotels and a great way to meet fellow solo travellers from all walks of life!

• Use SkyScanner and type in your nearest airport and put everywhere into the search bar with your desired dates, I’d recommend doing 2-4 days at a time as this is affordable and you can do a lot in that time if you plan ahead and I’ll help you!

• Once you’ve sorted the search results from least to most expensive choose the least expensive destination.

• Choose direct flights as this is easier and stress free.

• Go on booking.com and type in the destination into the search bar and filter the search to hostels.

• Once you’ve filtered the search to hostels sort the hostels from least to most expensive and choose the least expensive.

• Take a small carry on to save extra fees so a backpack or small bag and let the airline allocate you random seats so there are no extra charges.

• Check the bus routes/train routes in advance or see if Uber or Bolt is avaible in that country as this can be handy.

• Once you’ve checked into your hostel see if there is a WhatsApp group as most hostels organise excursions or have WhatsApp groups like the Pink Palace Hostel in Corfu, Greece which is great for solo travellers as they organise excursions and have on site entertainment and a WhatsApp group for all the guests to interact and organise outings.

• Use booking.com to search the destination for excursions like boat trips or quad biking tours and plan ahead! This way you know what you’re doing each day and can have things to look forward to. I always book a boat trip every time I travel.

• Use tinder/grinder to meet locals but be careful and always meet in public places.

I was afraid like most people and had no clue where to start with my solo travelling.

I would advise booking a package holiday with flights, hotel and transfers at first.

My first solo trip was June 28th 2023 to Hotel Yavuz, Dalyan, Mugla with EasyJet holidays.

The package cost £410.89 and I booked it 4 days before flying.

I remember saying to my friend Honor, in work how I wanted to go on holiday and later that evening on Saturday night after I paid in my wages I just booked it on a whim!

It was the best thing I ever did. That holiday was spiritual I sing, I danced, I drunk, I cried it was absolutely amazing.

I met a girl, who like me was also solo travelling, same reason, was fed up of her boyfriend and the kids and just got off for a few days!

We clicked straight away at the shuttle bus which met us at the airport when we landed.

We shared a cigarette and realised we were both solo so just hung out the whole holiday.

It was amazing! And just like magic when Sophie left to return to Scotland, another girl came who was also solo travelling.

Me and Sophie were both mums with boyfriends in our thirties.

The other solo traveller I met was in her early twenties single and queer. She was amazing and so cool.

I even met this really hot Bulgarian Arab guy he dm’d me on instagram and saw I was also in turkey when I tagged my post and asked to take me on a date.

He took me to this cool Shisha bar with all lemon trees, and candles it was so cool.

So my first solo trip wasn’t solo at all, it was actually pretty filled with boat trips and beach days and shopping trips with my Scottish friend and dinner dates and drinks with the girl from London and romantic Shisha dates with the hot Bulgarian guy!

There is Sophie and I enjoying a sunset cruise to the mud baths and along the river it was spiritual and amazing!

I tried local Turkish cuisine and I also took a boat trip to Goçek.

I tried a Turkish Hamman Spa and had the most amazing time.

The hotel was amazing and so tranquil. The staff were so friendly and there were other solo travellers.

It was truly amazing and started my addiction to solo travel.
