This beautiful island in the Ionian sea offers so many experiences and natural wonder. This is my top 5 things to do whilst there, with a few other tips for if you are spending longer on the island (which I would totally recommend!).

I wouldn't recommend staying here for the whole duration of your stay as the towns are slightly smaller than those near the island capital Argostoli, however, the idyllic beach towns are 100% worth the bus ride or road trip. 

I'd recommend spending an evening here, getting a lovely dinner at either a harbourside restaurant or somewhere central to the town (the ones along the harbour can be a little more pricey). Then stroll down to the waterfront and watch the turtles swim by, and wait for the beautiful sunset. If you walk roughly 20 minutes along the coast you will reach the Saint Theodore lighthouse. This is worth a visit itself, and is another stunning sunset location close to Argostoli.  Anywhere on the West coast of the island offers stunning sunset views so other places of interest could be Lourdas or Lixouri. 

The temperate climate of the Ionian islands makes them great locations for vineyards too. As you explore the island, the higher you trek, the more wine-tasting experiences you will discover. These vary from just tasting the delicacy, to tours of the production. Below are a few of the highly recommended companies:

Of course I want to start this by saying please be responsible when interacting with these magnificent sea creatures. With a famous population of Loggerhead turtles, Kefalonia boasts an amazing biodiversity of marine life. It is easiest to spot these turtles at Argostoli harbour, and often there are researchers monitoring their behaviour who are really friendly to talk to about the turtles. They can also guide you to the most up-to-date knowledge of the turtles' hiding spots. It is also known to be able to spot them on the Lassi beaches, as this is where they will lay their eggs in the early summer months. 

These stunning caves, despite being a tourist hotspot, are a natural wonder and a great day out. You can either buy a ticket to both caves or just one, but if you only have time for one the Melissani cave is easier to get to and potentially more beautiful. There are lots of busses running here, and it is only a short walk from Sami, which also has many transport links. I would recommend to explore Sami and its coastline for a relaxed afternoon after marvelling over the caves.
