The new Interrail! Cheap public transport in Germany: Deutschland-Ticket or 49€-Ticket FAQ
One ticket - almost all public transport in Germany included
If you’re planning on interrailing through Europe save real money and travel days on your pass by opting for this trick.
And also if you want to explore Germany by public transport this is the way to do it now.
Since May 1st 2023 there is a great new deal to get around Germany easily and for little money!
It’s called 49€-Ticket or Deutschland-Ticket. I know, weird name - but I’ll teach you quickly how and where to get it and how to make the most out of your time in Germany!
1. Where to buy the ticket?
Simply download the app, register with your email and follow the instructions to buy the e-ticket.
2. How does it work?
The ticket comes as a monthly subscription. But don’t worry! There’s an easy way for you to use it for a month only as well.
You simply book your ticket subscription for the preferred month, let’s say July - starting from July 1st. Now you only need to cancel your subscription within the app until the 10th of that month - so July 10th. Now your „subscription“ is valid only for this specific month, in this example the month of July.
If you’re planning on travelling for the following month as well just cancel your ticket until the 10th of the following month. You don’t need to wait until that date, you can cancel the subscription right after booking with pre-set dates in the future.
If you’re travelling after the 10th of each month make sure to plan ahead and get your ticket before that date. Otherwise you won’t be able to terminate the subscription within the first month (but within the second month).
3. Which transport options are NOT included?
It’s actually easier to name the options that you’ll have to avoid - or pay extra:
- all ICE/IC/EC connections (fast trains)
- all NightJet/RailJet connections (internationally operated trains)
What is included:
All options of regional public transport in all areas of Germany: public services of bus, train, tram, metro, even sometimes ferries or cable cars.
4. Where to go?
Find great destinations and travel recommendations in my guides & itineraries.
Great to know: the ticket is also valid to go to some cities in Germanys neighbouring countries such as Salzburg (Austria), Kufstein (Austria), Basel (Switzerland), Swinemünde (Poland), Luxembourg, destinations in the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Denmark.
This is info is especially important for all interrail pass users. You simply start your travel day from one of these cities in the bordering countries and travel further with your interrail pass.
