Going to Kilifi, Kenya
Slice of Paradise
Kilifi is renowned for its pristine, white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a laid-back atmosphere that immediately soothes the soul. The town's picturesque landscape offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Kilifi is sunny and filled with palm trees and fresh fruits. When you visit locals, it is common for them to serve you fresh coconut water!
Local Cuisine
When it comes to cuisine, Kilifi offers a blend of local and international flavors. Fresh seafood, especially the catch of the day, is a must-try for authentic seafood lovers. You can savor grilled prawns, crab, and a variety of fish dishes at beachfront food huts. Additionally, the town's lively street markets are perfect for tasting local delicacies like Swahili biryani, chapati, and grilled maize. The common Kenyan delight is chapati, so make sure to try it fresh!
A Vibrant Community
Kilifi's welcoming and warm-hearted residents contribute to its unique charm. The town's vibrant and diverse community includes locals, expatriates, and travelers who have made Kilifi their home. This rich blend of cultures and backgrounds creates an open and inclusive atmosphere where everyone can feel at home. The culture makes it common to walk up to any home, sit down, and have a conversation together (you may need to travel with a translator). I loved spending everyday going to homes and sharing life stories and encouragements with one another. Whether you're mingling with locals, chatting with expats, or bonding with fellow travelers, Kilifi is a place where friendships are easily forged.
Note: most restaurants and places to stay are not posted online because shops are set up by locals everyday and it is common to be hosted by the community. Transportation is from hailing a taxi or motorbike from Mombassa.
