Mount Gambier and the city of craters

Travel Warnambool to Mount Gambier. Travel time 2 hours 15 minutes 

Total Distance today: 435 km (4 hrs 45 min from Mount Gambier to Melbourne)

Start early from Melbourne and travel west on the M1 to Geelong. 1 hour 

3) Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve: drive or walk through this volcano crater that is home to Emus, Koalas, Kangaroos and many other Australian natives. Learn about local Indigenous cultural and this ecological wonder.

3pm onwards: Swim at the Little Blue Lake

Explore the nearby ruins of the old Cape Northumberland Lighthouse. Travel Along the coast where you will find stops such as Shelley Beach, Finger Point Beach and Balckfellows Caves.

A locals gem, the Little Blue Lake is a locals know swimming hole, set just off the road on private property that is open to the public. 

Stop in at a local favour Scroll Queen for your choice of multiple locally made scroll flavours.

Walk to the top of Mount Schank for amazing views out across the coast and back towards Mount Gambier. 

Travel 30minutes to Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park. 

Enjoy a picnic with facilities available amidst the peaceful natural landscape, making it an ideal spot for a family outing or nature break. 

Then enjoying the unique opportunity to explore an ancient dolomite cave filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

Travel from Hamilton to the Billimina Shelter. Travel time 55minutes, distance 73km. 

 The Billimina Shelter, located in the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, is a significant Aboriginal rock art site. The paintings, thought to be thousands of years old, depict a variety of symbols and human figures, offering insight into the cultural and spiritual life of the Jardwadjali people. The site was used as a meeting and ceremonial place, and the paintings likely tell stories of social gatherings, hunting, and the Dreamtime. Visiting the shelter offers a glimpse into one of Australia’s rich Indigenous heritage sites, preserving ancient traditions and connections to the land.

The walk to the shelter is 1.2km, allow 45minutes total for this walk.
