SOUTH COAST OF ICELAND: the BEST 3 days itinerary

Let's go on the road! You will have to leave early from Reykjavík, I would suggest you stop by Hella at Almar Bakari (🚙: 1h30). I stopped there once on a road trip and now I cannot not stop to grab sandwiches and Kleinur every single time! 

Your first stop will be by Gljufrabui, a hidden waterfall in a cave (🚙: 30min). It can be pretty crowded so I would highly recommend you to get there before any tourist bus (they usually depart from Reykjavík around 8-9h)! 👀

I personally usually park at the camping right next to Gljufrabui and walk by the path to reach Seljalandsfoss, your next stop in the same location (🚶: 10min).

You might have seen this waterfall in many travel pictures or even in Justin Bieber's music video. You can walk all around the waterfall to find your perfect shot! 📸

Now heading to Skógar. 🌲 In this place, you will find two of my favourite waterfalls in Iceland (🚙: 30min). 

After exploring these two beautiful gems, it is now time to drive direction Vík! It's the biggest city in the South of Iceland and it will be where you will be staying for the night! 🌟

And then it is already time to drive back to Reykjavík! It's a 4 hours drive all the way to the capital. On the way, you can easily stop by Vík on the way back to get some lunch! 🛣️

Right after that, you will stop by the last sighting of the day at the pretty well known black sand beach, Reynisfjara (🚙: 20min). 

It's also a pretty good place to catch the sunset. According to the tide you can get access to a cave made of basalt columns and walk by the shore. BUT it's really important that you read the signs when arriving there cause we have what we call sneaker waves that are very dangerous. So PLEASE do not get near the water for your own safety! 🌊

Now it's time to check in your accommodation in Vík (🚙: 15min)! There are not so many options in Iceland for accommodations but here are two that I tried and enjoyed personally! 😴

For dinner, there are some restaurants in Vik that can please all types of tastes! 

Here we go for another beautiful day of adventure in the South of Iceland! 🌞

One place you must stop by that is pretty well known by locals is the Skool Beans Coffee Shop! It's an attraction in itself! They serve tasty hot drinks and nice bakeries. ☕

I would suggest you stop by Kronan before leaving Vík, just to grab some sandwiches for lunch. 🥪

Let's hit the road to our first destination of the day: Fjaðrárgljúfur (🚙: 1h). To reach the canyon, you will have to take a gravel road for the last 5 minutes so just always be careful when driving on this type of road, you can easily break your windshield when meeting cars in the opposite direction. 💥

Once parked, you will have to walk a bit to reach the different viewpoints and believe me, it's all worth it!

Right after that, you will be driving in direction of Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon (🚙: 1h45) and the next activity there are different options for you to choose from:

A) You can go on a glacier hike in Skaftafell on the glacier of Fjallsjökull. This activity is offered all year. ❄️

B) If you come in Winter (November to March), you should definitely go for an excursion in Ice Caves! 🧊

C) If you come in Summer (May to October), I would highly recommend you to kayak in Jökulsárlón in the middle of Icebergs and Seals. 🚣

You will have to book the activity in advance and be aware they are subject to changes due to the weather conditions. I would suggest you book the activity in the beginning of the afternoon so if it gets cancelled, you could eventually reschedule it at the end of your trip, on your way back to Reykjavík. 📝

Jökulsárlón and the Diamond Beach are literally next to each other. It's also the perfect location to spot seals playing and hunting around! They are here all year so for sure you will see them! 👀

After ending beautifully the day, you can now drive to Höfn where you will be staying the night (🚙: 1h10). 

I've been many times in Höfn and these are two of the restaurants that I would easily recommend to you! Otherwise, when I'm just travelling late at night with my friends in Summer, we would eat at the gas station as they serve burgers, fries and so on. 🥣

Last day of your adventure, make sure to wake up early to catch the sunrise in Vestrahorn (🚙: 20min). 🌄

You can walk around this beautiful endless black sand beach but also get access to the Viking Village prop which was originally made for a movie that has never been shot but eventually it has been used for the series The Witcher Blood Origin! 🎥

Since you are in the area, there is one place where you can actually experience the Icelandic hot spring culture and it is at Hoffell Hot Tubs. You can bath in naturally hot waters while enjoying the incredible views of Iceland. ♨️

Well, all there's left to say is wishing you the best trip ever! 🎉

One of them is extremely famous: Skógafoss. For sure you have seen pictures, movies with this majestuous waterfall in it (Thor, Vikings...). ⚔️ 

The other one is my special hidden gem: Kvernufoss. It's a beautiful sanctuary that sadly is becoming more and more known/touristy making it a tad less raw but still pretty astonishing. 🧚

But right before that, stop by Dyrhólaey, from there you will get a mind-blowing view over the ocean, the glaciers and the incredible land of Iceland. During the Summer you can observe Puffins from pretty close and during the Winter it's also an awesome place to catch the early sunset. ☀️

I usually stop by Ströndin because it's nice, cosy and usually always open! 🍻

Otherwise, if you fancy burgers there is Smiðjan Brugghús and if you prefer pizza you should definitely try the Black Crust Pizzeria. 🍔🍕

You will have the time to eat your sandwiches with an incredible view right before your activity.
