Australias best shark and ray dive - Wolf Rock

Australias best shark and ray dive - Wolf Rock

Celina Lucht
I bet you have never heard of this dive site, but it is actually one of the best in Australia because of it’s biodiversity. If you love friendly sharks, octopus, manta rays and big swarms of fish, you are at the right place. You can even find yourself some shark teeth to keep. I actually have had a very funny personal experience, that I will tell you about.

Why is this dive site so special?

You can find yourself swimming next to 10+ nurse sharks and also see a leopard shark and an octopus. This dive site never disappoints!

Grey Nurse Sharks are breeding here from December to July, but they can be found all year around.

You can find Eagle Rays, Grouper and Olive Sea Snakes all year around too.

Manta Rays can be seen between March and October.

Humpback Whales can be seen between June and October.

Leopard Sharks can be seen between November and March.

It can be a bit challenging, because there are some currents and the visibility can be low, but theee is always a dive guide guiding you around the dive site.

My personal experience:

This dive was my first dive outside of Western Australia. I was a bit excited, also because I have only seen one nurse shark before. When we got there it was not clear if we can do the dive because the weather conditions weren’t great, buy luckily it we went out.

So now here is the not so much fun part of the story: When we descended I lost my Go Pro. It had a floaty on it, so it went up to the surface. I couldn’t go up to get it, because when you are diving deep, you have to do stops on your way up. So I was stressing the whole dive about the Go Pro. The good thing was, that I wasn’t even worrying about the sharks. When we got up again, I knew that I will not find it again.

So I decided to just be present and enjoy the second dive. The dive was so so amazing! There were like 10 sharks around us at the same time and I even found shark teeth to keep.

Now the funny part: 2 months after this dive I got a message from the dive school and they told me that someone found the Go Pro stranded on the beach. This guy called the diving school, to ask if they know who it belongs to. They remember that I have lost my Go Pro and gave me his contacts. He actually lived only 15 minutes away from me, so we met up and he gave me my still functional Go Pro back. How lucky!!!

How will the day look like?
