Day Trips through Basque Country
Ten Day Trips Worth the Stop
Use Public Transportation to Explore the Breathtaking Coastline & Rolling Mountains throughout Basque Country. The following information is based on my personal experience of living in San Sebastian and visiting these areas during Winter/Spring 2023. All photos are my own!
San Sebastian to Biarritz:
Stop #1: Pasaia
What to expect: Beautiful port town along glistening water, colorful buildings, small plaza with restaurants and bars, tiny one-way cobblestone roads, chapel on a hill.
How to get there: Option 1- Hike over Mount Ulia, Option 2- Take the Bus, or both, one each way, which is what we did!
Option 1, Hiking- There are multiple trails over Mount Ulia that lead you to Pasaia. You can take the more inland route or the coastal route (our choice). The hike is about 3 miles one-way and has the most gorgeous views. There are signs and trail guides throughout the hike because you do lose phone service. I went with another friend in her 20’s and felt completely safe the entire time. It’s not terribly hard, most of the time it’s a flat walk, but towards the end, you have to hike at a downwards incline and take old steps that guide you into the water channel. Once you make it down the stairs, the ground is paved and evens out. You walk alongside the water into town- we got to follow kayakers which made it that much more dreamy. From there, you will hop on the smallest ferry for a 2 minute ride across the small waterway, cash (efectivo/monedas) required. The hike is so colorful and unique!
