The Ultimate Guide to Tangier

The Ultimate Guide to Tangier

I love Tangier. In a country where "relaxing" and "cities" don't usually mix, the Mediterranean air, sandy beaches, and craggy cliffs gives Tangier a certain laissez-faire vibe that Marrakesh, Fez, or Casablanca could only dream of. I like to say it's as though Morocco, France, and Spain had a baby featuring each country's best parts. It doesn't matter if you're in the old parts of the Kasbah or Medina, the Corniche, or in the west by Cap Spartel. It's magnificent. In this article, I (hope to) show off the best sites of Tangier by location along with some good points about logistics and hotel recommendations. Need anything more? Kasbah

Bab Al Bahr
@markfedoronko
Part of the 17th century fortifications, Bab al-Bahr is the sea game, leading to a promenade overlooking the Tanger Ville port and the Mediterranean. When you leave through the gate, turn left. Along the wall there is a small coffee shop. This is a great place to grab a Moroccan espresso or mint tea and take in the beautiful view.

Kasbah Museum
@markfedoronko
The nicest museum in Tangier. Half of the museum is dedicated to antiquities and artifacts from Tangier's history. The other half is a modern art museum highlighting Morocco's art culture, both from local artists and Europeans who have found intrigue in the country. It's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The old mansion in which the museum is located is also quite beautiful.

Café Baba

A famed cafe in the Kasbah/right outside the Kasbah. With a wonderful rooftop and traditional interior, Cafe Baba is the closest you will likely be able to experience a traditional Moroccan coffee shop

El Morocco Club
@markfedoronko
Casual cafe by day, elegant dining establishment by night, the Morocco Club is a famed dining spot in Tangier. The King, Mohammed VI, dines here when he comes to Tangier. Probably the nicest spot in the old city to eat dinner

Medina

Rumi
@markfedoronko
This shop is in a little bit of a weird spot - the location down the hill from the Kasbah is residential and maze like and filled with locals listening to music, hanging out, and playing football. But Rumi is a little bougie gem (pun intended for the French speakers). A super interesting candle shop with candles decorated with tassels, you'll find lots of interesting Moroccan scents!

Chez Hassan - Bab Kasbah
@markfedoronko
A bit touristic, but a good spot for local fish! Located on an eventful hill on the western edge of the Medina
