💭About Matera:

Matera is one of the most unique places to explore in Italy. It is the second continuous inhabited city in the world, it's believed to be settled in since the 10th millennium BC.

The natural caves and soft Tuffo rock made it an easy natural settlement, yet a hostile one. The river below brought malaria and disease, while the damp caves brought mold. Yet despite this, people continued to inhabit the area.

Up until the 1950's, entire families would occupy the caves, known as the Sassi, living side by side with their animals. It was terrible living conditions, with immense poverty. Embarrassed by the situation the government ordered the Sassi be shut down, and moved the families into the "new" city of mass apartment buildings. This wasn't taken so great by the locals... It wasn't until the 1990's that the Sassi were reopened.
