Adventure sports aren’t for the faint hearted. Imagine plunging down 83 metres towards gurgling green waters. Or gliding over the majestic peaks of the Himalayas. What makes for one’s bucket-list endeavour, may feature as a total nightmare for another. But for those who revel in adrenaline-spiking exploits: you don’t need to cross overseas for the ultimate hair raising escapades. You can get your fill right here in India.

1. Bungee Jumping in Rishikesh -

Have you taken a giant leap (of more than faith) from India’s highest bungee jumping point? Organised atop a cliff in Mohan Chatti village, which offers 360 degree views of the stunning Rishikesh landscape, the activity is conducted by Jumpin Heights, formed back in 2006 by ex-army captain Rahul Nigam. The Jump Zone, which has witnessed countless prayers and second thoughts, was designed by a professional team from New Zealand, a country native to the sport. Those brave enough to try taking the plunge down 83 metres towards the Hyul, a tributary of the Ganga, can be rest assured that the international safety standards are followed to the T and that as of now, over 1,00,000 jumps have been conducted safely. For precautionary reasons, Jumpin Heights, which also operates bungees in Goa, has temporarily halted its operations for the monsoon season.

2. Scuba Diving in Havelock Island -

With its pristine beaches and turquoise waters, Havelock Island in the Andaman, is a dream for scuba divers across the country. A brief training programme precedes the actual dive, following which, unless you’re a professional, you’re assigned individual divers. Lacadives, a pioneer of scuba diving in India, which was set up in 1995 by ad film director Prahlad Kakkar and his wife, Mitali is one of the more famous organisers and can boast of a PADI 5-Star Dive Centre at Havelock and another one at Chidiya Tapu. Some other diving spots worth mentioning are The Wall, situated in a channel between Havelock and Peel Islands and usually take you 10 metres underwater where you see octopus and bright pelagic fish; and White House Rock, a circular reef that offers sightings of a range of colourful corals and fish like tuna, trevally, and barracudas.

3. Surfing in Kovalam -

Over the years, Kovalam’s surfing tradition has quietly risen to the forefront. Despite the pandemic cutting major tourism losses, a series of schools run by local surfers from the fishing village have now popped up and are attracting surfing enthusiasts from across India. It’s said that the coastal town has one of the best waves on the East coast thanks to its rocks and sandbars, which makes it possible to surf here through all seasons of the year, even monsoons. It also hosts the Covelong Point Surf and Music Festival, which, save for the two years plagued by COVID-19, takes place annually. Surfing competitions also provide a major draw to the region.

4. Paragliding in Bir-Billing -

It’s said that March to May and October to November mark the best time to go paragliding in Bir-Billing. Those ready to soar over the tops of the Himalayan mountain ranges will take off from Billing, which is 14 kilometres by road from Bir, where you’ll arrive on a soft landing. Riding in tandem with an instructor, the paragliding experience, which will have you up in the air at over 8,000 feet from sea level will gift you with a bird's-eye view of the striking Dhaulader, with village houses and monasteries littering its many ranges.
