10 Essentials For Traveling Abroad
1. Medication
Perscrition & over-the-counter meds
Of course it’s important to carry any essential medication with you onboard while flying, but you may also want to pack a few items for common ailments. A small travel pack to include remedies for headaches, fever, stomach issues, cold/flu, sleep aides, & glasses/contacts.
Yes! I understand that many of these can be purchased abroad…but from personal experience, it’s sometimes not that easy or readily available. Plus, it’s better to take what your body is used to…again from personal experience. (I go into detail on my podcast episode on the subject.)
2. In Case of Emergency Contact
A trusted family member or friend.
A tip for parents traveling with young children is a Road Id Bracelet. We’ve purchased these in the past for our kids to wear. We put OUR names & contact info on the bracelet…not our children’s. In the event that our child becomes lost, we can be contacted immediately.
3. Copies of Passports
Two will do!
Don’t carry with you at all times. Leave the copies in the hotel room safe and/or in another secure location. In fact, I don’t carry my passport with me while sightseeing. It’s always in a secure location back at the hotel.
4. Multiple Forms of Payment
Cash is still King
Although many places have gone “cash-free” it’s a good idea to have two different cards, especially if one is an American Express. Many places won’t accept Amex, so you’ll need a Visa or Mastercard instead.
Contact your bank and card company and ask about foreign transaction fees and whether your card will work abroad.
5. Proper Purse or Wallet
Crossbody, wallet in front pocket, or under clothing bag.
Before heading out, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes to organize yourself, take only essentials for the day, and make sure your purse or wallet is on the front part of your body.
Crowded trains, buses, attractions also attract pickpockets. Simple awareness of your surroundings and belongings makes you less likely to be a target.
6. Bad Weather Gear
Rain jacket, poncho, or umbrella
We fail at this. I cannot count the times we’ve had to purchase an over-priced umbrella or mittens that I had to buy at the Guiness gift shop because I forgot to pack some. (Now I rock them & get compliments! 🤣)
Bottom line, don’t be like us.
Invest in a jacket that is water-resistant and can fit over layers is best!
7. Electrical Adapters
Check the countries!!
Not all adapters work in all countries. Always check the packaging before purchasing the make sure it will work where you’re traveling to.
The UK has a different configuration than the rest of Europe.
8. A Usable Phone Plan
Don’t get surprised with an astronomical bill.
Simply contact your cell phone carrier to see if you have an international plan and compare pricing.
Also, make sure to ask if a separate SIM card is needed.
9. A family/Friend Back Home With Knowledge of Your Itinerary
Can be your emergency contact
It’s always a good idea to let family or friends know where you are and are aware of any changes to your plans.
Note—Don’t post on social media in real time. Post after you’ve arrived back home as a safety precaution.
10. A Positive Attitude
An open mind & flexibility is good too!
This goes for ANY traveler from ANY country.
Why do we travel?
Hopefully to experience what we’re not used to! So, remember, just because the customs, attitudes, or practices are different than how we do it back home…just go with it!
