Preview of Charleston, SC Eats

Places you’ll love to eat at drink at when you’re in Charleston and some of the surrounding islands. You’ll get a lot of the same recommendations for downtown Charleston (High Cotton, Husk, SNOB), and while those are all very good restaurants, I want to give you the local take on some of the greatest spots around the city that might not show up at the top of your searches. This is a shortened version of the longer guide. If you like what you see, I hope you will consider purchasing the full guide.

Wanted to include the weather since it can change on a dime. I’ve indicated spots where you might want to steer clear if it’s raining and/or too hot

Downtown / King Street

If you’re visiting Charleston then King Street will come up a lot in your searches. King street has some great shopping and even better restaurants. Whether you’re looking for southern classics like shrimp and grits or venturing out for high quality Chinese food, downtown Charleston and King Street are your go to places!

Melfi's

Delicious Italian food and one of the coldest martinis around! Check out the fresh made pasta, and anything with the straciatella cheese is sure to be amazing.

Beautiful South by Kwei Fei
@deleteduser698
Charleston doesn’t have a ton of Chinese food options so not only is this place unique but it’s delicious! A smaller menu with very high quality ingredients in a beautiful space gives you a great reprieve from the southern comfort food that most likely is dominating your trip to the south.

James Island / Folly Beach

Located about 12 minutes from downtown, James island is a quaint part of Charleston with some great hidden gems. Another 7-10 minutes down the road you will get to Folly Beach aka “the edge of America” where there are some great beach bars and unique eats.

Jack of Cups Saloon
@deleteduser698
There’s no sign outside so look for the jester sitting on the roof and you’ll find your way into Jack of Cups which has a rotating menu offering global pub grub.

John’s Island

Just over the connector, a bit further out of downtown and past James Island sits John’s Island. The island is home to the Angel Oak, a Southern live oak tree estimated to be 400–500 years old and named for Justus Angel, the 19th-century owner of the land on which it stands. It is also known for its farms, producing tomatoes and numerous other agricultural products which makes its restaurant scene one that can’t be beat.

The Royal Tern
@deleteduser698
A hidden gem in John’s Island, the royal tern offers an innovative menu making fish the star of the show. Make sure to get the yeast rolls to start because they are insanely delicious, grab some local oysters and I promise everything you order will make you smile.

Stono Market and Tomato Shed Cafe
@deleteduser698
A super quaint spot on John’s island that features local produce and some good, down home cooking. The tomato pie is a must have and save time to walk the little market attached as well.
