Day 1: Get a feel for the city
This first day is ideal if you want to get a quick feel for the city after you had a travel day. This is a day with much time to relax but you quickly visit a couple of highlights.
The first day I didn't spend any money on acitivities! I only spended money on my food and public transport. For my public transport I got a 72 hour Roma metro ticket for €18,-. With this ticket I was able to get around the city by bus and metro.
Morning/Early afternoon activities:
Capitoline Hill - Viewpoint Forum Romanum
@jente
Welcome to the most beautiful viewpoint in Rome! We start the day by visiting this viewpoint. This hill gives you an amazing view over the skyline of ancient Rome. I highly recommend visiting this and taking in the looks of the old Roman temples and ruines.

Piazza Venezia
@jente
The second stop of today is the Piazza Venezia! This square in the middle of the street gives you an amazing view of the Monument of Victor Emanuel II.

Lunch:
Cin Cin Bar
@jente
A restaurant where I had my late lunch with a panoramic view over the Monument of Victor Emanuel II.

Afternoon/Early evening activities:
Trastevere
@jente
For the evening I headed to the culinary neighbourhood of Rome: Trastevere. Here I had my first pizza of my trip. This area is filled with cute shops and streets. There are sooo many restaurants and bars here which makes this area perfect for an evening out or a good dinner!
Details
Dinner:
Taverna 51
@jente
Taverna 51 is the restaurant where I ate pizza in Trastevere. It was a solid restaurant and I do recommend it.

Day 2: A historical day
This day was my favourite! I'm a historical geek so everything related to history is something I find really interesting. This day I learned so much about the ancient Romans and their lifestyles. This day I also used a Bird step to get around the city aside from using the metro.
Morning activities:
Colosseum
@jente
My morning started off with a tour trough the Colosseum and Roman Forum. I booked a tour with Get Your Guide for €65,-. This tour also included access to the arena area inside the Colosseum. I enjoyed it and was really glad to have access to the arena. If you are a historical geek like I am make sure to book a tour with access to the arena.
Details
Roman Forum
@jente
So as I stated in the last side note with the Colosseum I booked a tour with also access to the Roman Forum. My tour also had access to the Palatine Hill but because of the heat my group decided not to go up the hill. I'm not sure if I recommend visiting the Roman Forum by tour. There are pros and cons as always. My biggest con was the fact that it felt rushed. I feel like I've seen half of the Forum. If I had visited it by myself I would have taken things slowly so I could really take everything in. On the other hand I didn't really see any information signs in the Forum (I might have missed them because of the speed of my tour). I think this is a situation in which it depends on your preferences.

Baths of Caracalla
@jente
The Caracalla Baths is a ruin of an ancient Roman therme. It was a super fun experience! The ticket only costed me around €4,- making this entire experience budget proof and also very worth it in my opinion. I liked that I got to see how insanely big this ruin is, the beautiful art remainings of the therme and the remainings of the baths. This activity is not a must but I recommend adding it to your list.
Details
For Lunch I got a quick pasta somewhere near the Colosseum as I had to get a quick meal in to head towards the next sights. I had my lunch after the Caracalla baths.
Afternoon activities:
Amorino Rome
@jente
On my way to the Trevi Fountain I got passed Amorino. I stopped by to get a Gelato. It looks cool and it wasn't to expensive either! The ice cream costed: €5,56. If you want to get an ice cream near the Trevi Fountain this is a nice place to get one.

Trevi Fountain
@jente
This fountain is truly a piece of art! If you're interested in the story behind the fountain defenitely look it up because it's interesting. Also don't forget to toss in your coins ;).
Details
Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola
@jente
Oh yes I went to the famous instagramable church! Without jokes this ceiling is just stunning. I was lost for words when I got inside the church.
Note: If you want to see the mirror there's an insanely long line. I recommend going as early as possible because the line was to long for me.

Dinner!
Comodo Mercato Trevi
@jente
If I had to choose 1 restaurant from my trip that I recommend I'd say this is the one! This restaurant was beautiful on the inside and the food was great. It wasn't the most budgetproof option but it was worth it for sure. My dinner costed me: €36,50. It was the best Gnocchi I ever had though!
Details
Bird step transport:
It was quick and pretty nice but I only used it for shorter distances as it would have been quite expensive pretty quickly. There are multiple steps scattered around the city. I downloaded the following apps:
- Tier
- Bird
For both companies navigating the apps were incredibly easy and the steps were a nice way to get around the city.
Day 3: A day of art and churches
My thirth and final day in Rome. I was actually really sad to leave the next morning as I had a lot of fun in this city. On my last day there were still a couple of highlights I had to visit! This day was a little less packed than my second day.
Morning activities:
Pantheon
@jente
I got to the Pantheon at around 9:30am. Now I'd still recommend going earlier than this. When I decided to get in line, the line was already very long. I think I was in line for around 45 minuts. The pantheon is a former Pagen church. The building is very interesting with it's hole inside the roof and all the artificial althars in this church.
Details
Castel Sant'Angelo
@jente
Sadly I didn't have the time to visit the inside of this castle. If I return to Rome I defenitely will do that! The bridge guarded by the angles leading up to this fortress is so cool to walk over. I really liked the outside look of Castel Sant'Angelo.
Details
Lunch:
AGO & LILLO BISTROT
@jente
When you are in Rome you have to try the signature pasta: Pasta Carbonara. I had this amazing pasta in this bistrot. It's super close to the Vatican as well. I wonder what my next stop for the day was ;).
Details
Afternoon activities:
Vatican Museums
@jente
The museums are filled with artworks and ancient stories. This was one of the highlights of the trip! I booked a tour trough the museums. For this one it also depends on personal preferance as the tour felt kind of rushed again. The tour was very interesting. I learned a lot about Michael Angelo and his artworks. The museums are amazing!
My tour also had access to the Sixteine Chapel. I defenitely recommend that one, it is stunning. Pictures inside the Chapel aren't allowed and there are lots of guards to make sure people won't do that.
Details
St. Peter's Basilica
@jente
The St Peter's Basilica was included in my tour but I got to visit it without my tour guide. I really liked this church. Everywhere you look there's art and it's so big as well. It's nice as you recognize some of it from when the pope is on TV.
Details
Vatican City
@jente
The famous square of the Vatican City was the last stop I had regarding the Vatican.
Details
Spanish Steps
@jente
The spanish steps were my final sight to end of my trip to Rome. This was a nice area with lots of shops. The steps were really nice. I recommend going up the steps for a nice view!
Details
Dinner:
Le Bistro Roma
@jente
In this restaurant I had some pumpkin ravioli. It was a good restaurant near the Spanish Steps.
Details
This was my last dinner in Rome before heading back to The Netherlands. Hopefully my intenary can help some of you out with planning their trip to the magical Rome!
