Southern Iceland 5-Day Travel Guide

The cozy camper van was an amazing and comfortable way to go and explore Iceland. The roof is a large sunroof so it’s fun to watch the northern lights through at night! It was the perfect and fun way to travel around. It was definitely the best van rental we saw the whole time we were there!

I got these hiking shoes and they were the best purchase I could’ve made. They are pricey but completely worth it.

I got some just in case and they ended up being super handy for a quick snack in between hikes! I definite recommend but it’s not required. Iceland has some of the best food I’ve ever had. These peak performance dried food are really good. I haven’t had any complaints.

I would recommend going to Iceland anytime between September-November. You will get dark nights which are necessary to see the northern lights but you have enough daylight to do the activities!

I’ve added some of my favorites! However, you will not have a hard time finding an amazing place to eat. All of the food I had while visiting was AMAZING! Just do whatever is easiest for you and when it’s convenient for you! 

Spend the day exploring their biggest city. Make reservations at some of their Michelin star resteraunts and you won’t be disappointed. You can’t go wrong with food here though if you aren’t wanting to spend too much money. The shopping here is fun as well! The town is super clean and a joy just to walk through. 

Campsite: There are a ton of camping grounds around Reykjavik that you can stay in tonight and tomorrow night! Just check online to make sure they are open because some of them shut down during certain times of the year!

Start your hike around the active volcano around 10:30 in the morning. You should alot around 2.5 hours to walk around and view the lava fields. The hike is not strenuous and you can go however far you would like to go. The view doesn’t drastically change the farther you go. If you want to see the lava inside the volcano I would recommend taking a helicopter tour. 

Around 1:30 in the afternoon, start heading to the blue lagoon. You can reserve your spot ahead of time and make reservations, which I would definitely recommend doing. The hot springs are amazing. I recommend purchasing the package that includes the three face masks and the drinks. It was totally worth it. Their resteraunt is super yummy and it’s nice to go to after spending time in ther hot springs.

Start the hike around 9 am. It will take ou around 2.5 hours to complete. This was the most beautiful and coolest hike I have ever done! It is not for the faint of heart though. It’s a slightly steep hike with safety chains all the way through the steep parts of the hike. You do have to cross the river so I do recommend wearing water shoes. You hold onto a rope and cross on a tree log. But it’s so fun, interactive, and beautiful. I totally recommend as long as you don’t have any health stipulations that would make it unsafe. 

Silfra Fissure Snorkeling Tour - Into The Blue

Make your tour to start at 1:15! You will have plenty of time to get there. This was such a fun tour. They give you dry suits so you aren’t completely freezing. The water is so clean and is filtered from the lava rock you can drink it straight from the fissure. This tour will take around 3 hours.

This is a great way to settle the day. This place makes its own sour dough bread in the geothermal ovens they have. I would recommend getting a soup with this bread it is so good!! 

This restaraunt makes its own chocolate! It was so yummy and it was fun getting a few treats to go afterwards. It was a great meal. 

Start heading to the geyser around 9 in the morning. This a really fast fun sight. It should take less than 30 minutes to erupt. 

The falls will take you about and hour to complete. 

Hestheimar – Book horse riding through their site

Hestheimar was were we schedule to do some horse back riding on the fluffy Icelandic horses! It was local, super fun, and close to volcanic lava fields. You ride through a river and across their land. It was super fun! Make sure you book ahead. We booked our ride at noon. 

Easy place to eat right at the entrance of the beach!

Skaftafell Blue Ice Cave & Glacier Hike - Tröll Expeditions

This tour was so fun!! You hike around on the glaciers and walk through and ice cave. Great company and they provide all the equipment. We booked our tour at 9:00 am. It will take approximately 4 hours.

This was one of our favorite tours!! This is a must. Make sure you dress warm. You will see seals

This is right next to the zodiac tour so make sure to go walk the beach after! It won’t take long. 

This would be my last meal if I could choose. I’ve never liked lobster but omg their lobster pasta was so good. It was melt in your mouth delicious. YOU HAVE TO STOP HERE!
