Italy's undiscovered cities - BOLOGNA

Italy's undiscovered cities - BOLOGNA

Did you ever wonder where "bolognese sauce" comes from? Well, this guide is finally going to answer that question! Bologna has so many things to offer I don't even know where to begin. Let me give you some reasons why you should read this guide: - Bologna's Airport (BLQ) and Central train station connect the city to the rest of the country, all of Europe and several international destinations SUPER EASILY - It's not cheap, but definitely cheaper than big cities like Rome, Venice or Florence. Because of its train station you might even consider staying in a smaller town nearby and saving money that way. - You will be able to avoid huge crowds of tourists while experiencing local-living, especially thanks to the thousands of students who attend the University of Bologna. - Whether you also want to spend a few days by the beach or go get some fresh air in the mountains, you will have the chance to do both!

How long of a visit should you plan?

If you are invested in visiting the city throughly I would consider spending 2/3 days here. Of course a one-day-trip is also a good option, so scroll down to find a suggested itinerary to be sure not to miss any of the hot spots of Bologna!

What you can't miss out on

Here's a list of what you should visit based on your interests: click on the places to see where they are on the map and to find out additional info.

Historical & Artistic landmarks

As any other european city also Bologna has a main square that represents its essence: Piazza Maggiore and the unfinished San Petronio Church should definitely be included in your itinerary. Every small village or big city in Italy has a patron saint and Petronio is the one of Bologna, in fact he moved there after the Barbarian Invasions and helped rebuild the city from scratch in the early 400 BC.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Italian curious traveller - discovering new places is my favorite hobby! My name is Giorgia, I grew up in Italy and spent my whole childhood travelling around with my family. After high school I got the opportunity to go study in the US while being on a softball scholarship and of course I had to take it :) I spent two years there, until last summer I decided to follow my dreams and share my passion for travelling with others - I am now a licensed tour leader in Italy and I studied travel designing to prepare custom itineraries! I love both city sightseeing and hiking (with my dog), so I like trips that combine those two things. I believe Italy in particular has a lot of undiscovered natural beauties, which deserve attention as much as the big cities. If you like discovering a country through its cities, but you also want the chance to explore it from a different point of view, you are in the right place!
