The Yucatán Peninsula was where one of the most important cultures in the world emerged: the Maya.

You can see ruins of their buldings everywhere: even when driving through some small villages, you can sometimes see them by a road. But five most important and jaw-dropping sites that I recommend are Ek Balam Archaeological Site, Labná Archaeological Zone, X’Cambó Archaeological Site Coba, and, the most important, one of the seven wonders of the world, Chichén Itzá Archaeological Zone. 

Loved by tourists (a bit cheaper than Chichen Itza + you can climb the buildings and see the surrounding areas from the top of a pyramid), Ek Balam has one of the best-preserved artistic elements of the Mayan culture.

It was an essential political and commercial centre. The main building is a tomb of the first known king of the area (Ukit Kan Le´t Tok) with a facade beautifully decorated with iconographic elements of riches, warriors and snakes.

 Calakmul is a significant archaeological site located in the dense jungles of the Campeche region in Mexico, renowned for being one of the largest and most powerful ancient Mayan cities. Flourishing between the 6th and 9th centuries AD, it was a major political and military rival to Tikal, another prominent Mayan city. The site features the Great Pyramid, one of the tallest Mayan structures, offering stunning views over the forest canopy. The extensive ruins, including numerous temples, plazas, and stelae, provide valuable insights into the city's complex political history, social organization, and cultural achievements. Its remote location and rich biodiversity also make it a unique and intriguing destination for both archaeologists and visitors.

Labná is a significant archaeological site located in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, celebrated for its exquisite ancient Mayan architecture. It's a part of the Puuc region, known for its distinctive ornate style characterized by elaborate stone mosaics, intricate latticework, and decorative friezes. Among its notable structures is the iconic "El Arco," a grand archway that exemplifies the region's architectural sophistication. The site also features the Palace, a large residential building adorned with detailed carvings and motifs. Labná offers a glimpse into the daily life and ceremonial practices of the Mayan civilization during its peak in the Late and Terminal Classic periods, around 600 to 1000 AD. 

Important archaeological site on the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, notable for its blend of coastal and inland Mayan influences. This ancient city thrived between 300 and 600 AD, serving as a crucial trade and salt production center. Among its prominent structures are the Temple of the Crossed Hands, named for the unique carvings found within, and the Temple of the Sacrifices, which hints at the ritualistic practices of the inhabitants. X'Cambó's strategic location near the coast facilitated extensive trade networks, linking it to other significant Mayan cities. The local cuisine is yet one more reason to visit this beautiful Magical Town in Yucatán, with its crave-worthy mondongo stew, chaya greens with eggs, and venison pipián stew.

Espita has a fascinating colonial history that lives on in its majestic, colorful buildings. The church of San José is one of the best examples of this with its tall, stately towers and elegant Franciscan style. Other important buildings you might want to see are the Juan José Méndez municipal market, the town hall, the former train station and La Casa de la Cultura.

➤ SIM Card: Locals recommended Telcel however we were super disappointed when it came to internet coverage of the network. Unless you're in a big city, you need to count on Wifi access.

➤ The best weather: November to March are the ideal months to travel to Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. It's winter so the temperatures are not that high (it doesn't mean it's not going to be horribly hot, you can still expect 30+ Celcius (90+ Fahrenheit) degrees! High season: expect crowds and higher prices.

➤ Shoulder Season: March to May is the shoulder season in Yucatan — a magical time when the weather is still nice, and the prices are lower. We were there end of January/beginning of March and everyone said it's super low season. Example: Chichen Itza can be visited by around 20k people daily; beginning of March it was around 8k (and many more similar examples from popular tourists' sites!)

➤ The best value: May to September will absolutely be the cheapest! However, it's rain season so expect to get wet, sweaty and bitten by bugs. Mosquitoes are quite common (the peninsula is covered in jungle). Don't forget your your eco-friendly bug spray!
