Guide to El Calafate

Guide to El Calafate

El Calafate is a town near the edge of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz. It is mainly known as the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park and therefore almost all of the activities to do are related to seeing the stunning and numerous glaciers. This guide includes: - 10 things to do - 5 Restaurants - 3 Breweries - 2 Coffee Shops - 9 places to stay (range of luxury, mid-range, and budget) - How to get to El Calafate - Recommendations for how to fit El Chalten into a greater trip and a promo code for my other Patagonia guides

Things to Do:

Perito Moreno Glacier

Perito Moreno Glacier
@elizabethrickert
The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the only still advancing glaciers in the world. It is located with in the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. You will need to buy a ticket to enter the park. These are only available to buy in person via card or Argentinian Pesos (not USD). If you visit the park multiple days you should keep your ticket from the day before to receive a discount. The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the only glaciers in the region reachable by car. You can take a tour, rent a car, or take a shuttle from El Calafate to visit. Once there you can walk the 4kms of pathways to see the glacier. I recommend packing a picnic and eating your lunch on the boardwalk. One of the things to look out for is that every 10 to 20 minutes huge chunks of ice fall from the face of the Perito Moreno glacier. It sounds like a clap of thunder so look out for that. Tours offer several different options for visiting the glacier as well including walking on top of the glacier, walking alongside it, and a boat tour of the front of the glacier.
