As one of the northernmost major cities of Italy, the joke is that Milanese folks are the least Italian of the Italians. They're the most on time, the most clear, the most reliable. Knowing this may help you translate how culturally different Milan is from other Italian cities!

How long should you spend in Milan?

It depends, honestly.

Milan is more of a living city than a tourism city, so you don't need a ton of time there. If it's part of a bigger whirlwind Italy trip, maximize your time in Rome or Cinque Terre rather than staying here.

I'd recommend two days, or three with a day trip.

You can see everything in one big day if that's what you want. Plan for 2ish hours at the Duomo, a self-guided walking tour that'll include a few of the niche spots or neighborhoods I include below. The Last Supper painting is a timed entry, but including getting there early, that'll be about an hour. It'll be an exhausting day, but it's doable.

If you're thinking of a day trip, I'd recommend Lake Como or Brescia!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
