The Faroe Islands Guide
Nally
Introducing the next great adventure destination: the Faroe Islands. Despite being part of Europe and (loosely) governed by Denmark, many people have never heard of these eighteen islands about halfway between Iceland and Norway. Those who make the journey will be greatly rewarded with deep fjords, pop-up waterfalls, and bright green valleys. A stunning coastline is never more than five kilometers away. Sheep outnumber hikers on wind-blown trails. While Tórshavn is one of the smallest—and cutest—capitals in the world. Go now. Nonstop flights recently started from New York, so these remote islands won’t remain under the radar for long.
This detailed guide includes:
Places: islands, cites, towns, villages
Stay: hotels
Eat: cafés, coffee shops, food trucks, restaurants, takeout
Drink: bars, craft beer
Shop: design stores, music
Do: beaches, churches, cliffs, gorges, hikes, historic sites, lakes, mountains, sailing, scenic drives, tunnels, viewpoints, waterfalls

Vágar
Vágar
@nally
Vágar is the third-largest island in the Faroes. It’s also the westernmost of the main islands. Highlights include the Múlafossur waterfall, Sørvágsvatn (a lake that looks like it drops into the sea), and small fishing villages with turf-roof houses.

Sørvágur
Sørvágur
@nally
If you arrive by air, Sørvágur is your first stop in the Faroe Islands. The Bay of Sør, one of the oldest towns on the Faroes, is home to Vágar Airport, a handful of restaurants, and the ferry to Mykines.

Vágar Floghavn
@nally
Vágar (FAE) is the only airport on the Faroe Islands. It was built by the British during World War II, abandoned until the 1960s, and finally extended to accommodate large aircraft about 20 years ago. Still, only a handful of flights arrive each day, and their landings are controlled by the fog. Expect easy security checks and long lines for car rentals. Then it takes about 45 minutes to drive to Tórshavn.

Hotel Vagar
@nally
This is not a luxury hotel. I repeat, this is not a luxury hotel. But sometimes, with an early flight the next morning, it helps to stay near the airport. Hotel Vágar is within walking distance of Vágar Airport and looks out over the runway. Rooms are clean, though incredibly small (even the doubles). People tend to hang out near the large windows in the restaurant, which doubles as a conference room, to stare at the green hills outside. Plan a late arrival after squeezing in a few last sights (Sørvágsvatn is just a few kilometers away).
Update: The hotel is currently undergoing renovations. A fresh, modern look should soon make for a more comfortable stay.

Nally
Big destinations. Little details.
I travel—a lot. I’m always taking notes, organizing quick getaways, plotting big holidays, and dreaming. I’ve been to six continents (I’ll get to Antarctica eventually), nearly 40 countries, and too many cities and islands to count.
Tons of planning, way more than is actually necessary, goes into each adventure. Your trips can benefit from my little addiction.
No two people are exactly alike. No two vacations should be the same either. These guides are designed to help you follow your passions, satisfy your cravings, and spark new whims. Think of them as starting points as you create your own exciting itineraries.
