Travel Mauritius on a Budget and see places most tourists won‘t 🌴
You don‘t want to travel with the expensive Taxi everywhere? Buses to all big cities are leaving directly from the Airport. When you exit the Airport on the arrival gate, just walk to the right until you see some stairs leading you to a big parking. There you can find the bus stop for the buses driving to Mahébourg and Vacoas-Phoenix. The busride itself is an experience already and is ca. 0.40ct per ride, but wait until you start to have a conversation with the nice locals! They always have great insider tips and help you with everything as they‘re happy to see some tourists in public transport as well.
There are some timetables on the internet for the bus departures, but don‘t rely on them. Buses will come in all directions very often, so don‘t worry!
Good to know: when you leave the bus in Curepipe, you can take the metro until Port Louis!
Our first stop was Flic en Flac. Unfortunately, we had rain the whole 3 days so no beach for us - but there‘s plenty to see on the island. We booked an air bnb named the orange house, which was 5 mins away from the beach and 5 mins from bus stops and supermarkets. Our host was amazing, he also helped us to rent a scooter, just ask him! The scooter was in total for 4 days 45€. If you prefer to travel with the bus, we would recommend you to also visit the small cascavelle shopping mall. There you can find a big supermarket which is cheaper than the small ones in the city, and also some nice Restaurants, a pharmacy, stores like Quicksilver and Roxy, etc. perfect for a rainy day.
After our first stopp, we headed down to le Morne. We took the Bus, but decided to rent a car in Le Morne as there are nearly no bus stopps around. We stayed at studio le morne which is - compared to all the 5* Hotels around - a much cheaper option to spend your days here. Ask your host for a car rental, he will happily recommend you his friend. Usually, I am always afraid when it comes to rent a car, but this time everything was perfect. The car was for 6 days 140€ and was fully covered. We could even bring it to the airport for the agency to pick it up there. The air bnb comes with a pool and a place where you can rent and play tennis - with a view! There are no supermarkets in le Morne, so you have to drive around 10min to the next big one. We would also recommend you to have dinner in Tamarin, as the city is very beautiful. In le Morne you can go snorkeling at the beautiful and quiet public beach, have some drinks at the beach and wander around. But also, it‘s the entry to hike the beautiful „mountain“ or to visit the lavilleon adventure parc. For sure you can also take the amazing road to Charamelle National parc, where you can visit the coloured earth and some beautiful waterfalls.
See the beautiful nature in the Charamel region!
Enjoy the beautiful sunset at the public beach in Le Morne.
After 5 days exploring the le Morne region we finally got some sun and decided to drive up north again to Grand Baie to spend the last 5 days at the beach! We this time booked the azure beach hotel for around 95€ per night including breakfast. The view from the balcony is amazing, as you can see! Also, it‘s in the middle of the city but still very quiet - we totally recommend! In 2 mins you reach the public beach, which is absolutely stunning. Also, the mall is 3 mins by foot. And some small boutiques are directly next to the hotel.
The hotel has a an amazing restaurant as well - enjoy!
Enjoying a fresh coconut on the public beach in grand baie.
Our breakfast with a view!
Especially on weekends, the public beach can be very crowded - but a nice local recommended us this absolute trasure, where you can enjoy some privacy (but with no restrooms). Just drive north direction to Cap Malheureux and stop at the parking shorty before the Bain Boeuf public beach. Walk the stairs down to the beach and walk left - after 5 mins you reach this quiet beach.
When you found those stairs, walk left for some privacy!
In total, we spent 14 days on the island, only discovering the south, west and north-west of the island. As we are both students, we travelled with a budget - with the goal to see as much as we can. Unfortunately, the sun only came out in our last 5 days, but we made the best out of it. For the transport, hotels, shopping, food and some entry fees we spent in total ~650€ per person and it was perfect for us!
