Friday Harbor, Washington

Friday Harbor, Washington

Friday Harbor is a magical, harbor town in the San Juan Islands of Washington. It is on San Juan Island, one of the three largest islands in this archipelago. If you are a seafaring, wildlife loving, outdoors person you have found your little piece of heaven. It is all here. Even those of you who love to shop or just people watch, Friday Harbor is the place for you. I brought my granddaughter here for her high school graduation gift and we spent four nights and five days exploring every inch of the island. We sailed, went whale watching, lighthouse hunting, and sometimes just relaxed with a drink and incredible views (ok, it was only me with the adult beverage). In this guide I share with you all the places we went, where we stayed, how we got there, and some wonderful restaurants. This is your one stop shop to Friday Harbor. I also include many of the photos I took at each place.

This is the fabulous property we stayed in. It absolutely had the best views on the island. It is at the far end of the island away from the harbor, but with a rental or your own car it is an easy, leisurely drive. Would stay here again in an instant. We often speak of just how wonderful it was.

Point To Point Air

Rather than take the hour long ferry to Friday Harbor (2 hour drive from Seattle to Anacortes to catch it) I chose to treat us with a 30 minute flight from SeaTac. P2P Air will pick you up and take you to their office. The view flying into the Harbor was worth the price of the fare.

Whether you want to wander the piers, do a little shopping, or grab a pint and watch the fleet come and go this is the place to be.

Lime Kiln Point State Park
@rhondaglisson
If you get lucky you can see whales and porpoise right from shore here at Lime Kiln Park! That's right, from Spring - Fall, Orcas, Humpback, Grey, Minke whales, and porpoise can be seen just off shore. It's actually considered one of the best places on earth to see them from land. Stop in at the Lime Kiln Interpretive Center for some interesting exhibits. There is hiking, picnicking and bird watching. This is a day use park and you will need either a one day pass, or an annual Discover Pass to get in.

The Farm at Krystal Acres

I mean really, is there anything cuter than baby Alpacas? This was one of our favorite places to visit. Be sure to stop by the store and check out their awesome Alpaca products.

South Beach
@rhondaglisson
This is the longest public beach on the island. It was perfect for beachcombing, and photography. This coastline was stunning. The grassy fields leading here are full of rabbits and foxes, so keep your eyes open.

All Aboard Sailing
@rhondaglisson
We took a 1/2 day sailing tour with All Aboard Sailing and it was one of our most favorite things. We chose the second tour of the day so it would include being on the water at sunset--it did not disappoint. Captain David was a great host and kept us informed all along the way of what we were seeing and what to be on the lookout for. We spotted lots of wildlife along the way. This is a definite "must do."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I am a traveler who loves to research and a researcher who loves to travel. I spend untold hours, days and even weeks researching my next destination. I pick destinations that peak my interest--most are ocean or wildlife related. One was taking off to Churchill, MB, at the bottom of the Arctic Circle, for the annual Beluga Whale migration--all by myself. That's just me, I do most of my traveling solo. I also love photography and have my camera with me every step of the way. I spent most of my life living in Georgia, but now I live in the gorgeous Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.
