Trento -a guide to the city
Trento -a guide to the city
Sebastian
Located in Northern Italy, Trento is the third largest city in the Alps, and represents well the Alpine culture. Its position makes it a great destination for people who love nature and outdoor activities, such as skiing, hiking or cycling. But it has plenty to offer for those who appreciate history and culture.
This brief guide highlights the main sights of the city, where to eat and what to do as well as some places to see outside the city itself, if you are looking to connect with nature.

WHAT TO DO
Despite being the third largest Alpine city, Trento is a very walkable city and the city center, the older part of the city, is fairly small.
Piazza del Duomo di Trento
@SebaAnder
The most recognizable sight of Trento is its main square, Piazza Duomo. The square is located next to the Cathedral and in its center we find the famous Neptune fountain (Fontana del Nettuno), which features a large statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea and water.
Piazza del Duomo is an ideal place where to take some photos and drink something in one of the cafés around it.
During the Christmas season, the Christmas tree of the city is located in the middle of the square

Via Rodolfo Belenzani
@SebaAnder
Via Rodolfo Belenzani is one of the most important and picturesque streets in Trento. Via Belenzani is home to many historical buildings, including the old town hall, as well as some of the current city offices. Most of the buildings are painted with beautiful and elaborated frescoes.
The original statue of Neptune that was on top of the fountain in Piazza Duomo is located in Palazzo Thun.
Reaching Piazza Duomo from Via Belenzani gives the most spectacular view of the fountain and the large square.

Buonconsiglio Castle Museum
@SebaAnder
The Buonconsiglio Castle (Castello del Buonconsiglio) is the castle of the city and one of the unmissable sights. The garden of the castle are accessible for free and are a good way to see the castle from up close without taking the tour inside.
But I recommend buying the ticket and taking the tour of the castle. The museum is home to frequent art exhibitions as well as an archeological history of the area around Trento.

Piazza Dante
@SebaAnder
Piazza Dante and its park is located just outside the train station. Its most memorable features are the large statue of Italian poet Dante Alighieri and the small ponds and bridges in the park.
The tourism information center is also located in the park.
Given its location nearby the train station, it is not the safest place to be, especially at night, but it is an area with constant police presence, in order to guarantee people's safety.

MUSE
@SebaAnder
The MUSE, the museum of science of Trento, is one of the city's newest additions, having just recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, but is already one of the most visited attractions. It is located in the newly built neighborhood of Le Albere, designed by the world famous architect Renzo Piano, and it is considered one of the best science museums in Italy.

Terrazza Panoramica Busa Degli Orsi
@SebaAnder
Just a 5 minutes cable car ride away, the observation deck "Busa degli Orsi" offers a great view of Trento and the mountains around it from above, and it is a great spot to take some photos.
The cable car station is located in Lungadige Monte Grappa, 1, Trento, right next to the river Adige. In very windy days, the cable car service is not available.

Croce del Campel
@SebaAnder
For those who want to hike and enjoy nature without going too far from Trento, the Monte Calisio is a great place to go. A short but enjoyable walk is the one that takes you from the small village of Villamontagna to the stone cross above the now closed restaurant Campel.
To get to Villamontagna, simply take the bus number 9 until the end of the line and follow the signs to the cross. From there you can enjoy a view of the city and the Adige Valley. On clear days it is possible to see the Beseno Castle near Rovereto

Rifugio Maranza
@SebaAnder
Another pleasant hike is the one that takes you from Passo del Cimirlo to Rifugio Maranza. Passo del Cimirlo is a mountain pass just a few kilometers above Povo. It is easier to drive to Passo del Cimirlo and park there and then following the path to Rifugio Maranza for 6 kilometers. Rifugio Maranza is an opened restaurant, where it is possible to eat a meal or drink something.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK
There are a lot of good options for food and drinks in Trento and these are just some of my favorite
Pizzeria Bella 'mbriana Trento
@SebaAnder
If you love pizza, Bella 'mbriana is one of the most popular choices in Trento at the moment. The pizzeria has been nationally recognized as one of the best Neapolitan-style pizza places in Italy

Forsterbräu Trento
@SebaAnder
If you are looking for a more traditional, Alpine-style meal, this is the place for you. It is very popular with tourists and it offers the chance to try genuine Trentino dishes

Loacker Café Trento
@SebaAnder
Loacker Cafè is the ideal place to enjoy a sweet breakfast or a hot coffee. Loacker Cafè is part of the Loacker brand, a wafer and chocolate company from neighboring Bolzano and has several cafes around the world. At Loacker Cafè you can buy Loacker's products, such as wafers, chocolates and chocolate spread, drink many different kinds of coffe or cocoa and enjoy something sweet, like strudel, pancakes or krapfen.
It is nice to seat outside and enjoy the view of Piazza Fiera, a large square, surrounded by the ancient city walls.

Caffè Tridente
@SebaAnder
Where is the place to have a drink at happy hour time in Trento? There are many options, but none have the view of Caffè Tridente. While it is not the cheapest bar/cafè in the city because of its location, it is very nice to sit with a drink in hand and enjoying the most famous view in Trento
