Your Guide to Broadway Musicals

Selma Ducanovic
Are you visiting New York City any time soon? Are you interested in watching a Broadway musical or play while you visit? In this guide, I take you through what it means when a show is "on Broadway," what some of the musicals are on Broadway, as well as show you spots in and around the theaters that I think are worth visiting. (The musicals listed in this article are correct as of August 2023) P.S.: I will also be including hotel recommendations at the bottom of this post, so make sure to make it all the way to the bottom! What is Broadway?

You may have heard the phrase that a show is "on Broadway," but what does that mean? A Broadway show is a musical or play that is held in one of the 41 professional theaters that have over 500 seats and are located in the Theater District of Manhattan. The Theater District is central to the Midtown neighborhood and hugs Broadway - the road that runs through the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. Hence the phrasing "On Broadway." However, many of these theaters are not exactly on the road of Broadway, so it may seem a bit confusing when you have to turn onto different streets to get to the shows, but don't worry, you're on the right path!

Most Broadway shows are musicals, but there are several plays that you can attend if show-tunes aren't your thing, or if you're just curious. This article will focus on the musicals.

What Are Some of the Broadway Staples?

Broadway runs are often open-ended and depend on critical response. If ticket sales are good, and stay good, then the show can go on for a very long time. See below for some of the currently-running Broadway staples.

Chicago (1996 Revival)

"Chicago" is Broadway's longest running current show and musical, as it's been on Broadway since November 1996. It's also considered Broadway's longest running revival (A revival is when a show that has previously opened and closed on Broadway gets brought back several years later for a different production). "Chicago" has won several Tony Awards in its time, and so its a safe-bet if you're not sure what to go see.

Ambassador Theatre
@selma
The musical "Chicago" is set in the 1920s and is based off a play by the same name written by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. The musical is based off the 1924 trial of accused murderers Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner, which Watkins had covered for the Chicago Tribune. Explores the topic of the "celebrity criminal" and satirizes the corruption of the criminal justice system.

Wicked

"Wicked" has been on Broadway since October 2003 and is based off a 1995 book called "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" which, in turn, is based off the story of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." The show is told from the perspective of the witches from the Land of Oz. "Wicked" has won 10 Tony Awards - including the award for Best Musical - and countless other awards as well.

Gershwin Theatre
@selma
"Wicked" tells the story of the friendship of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (Glinda the Good Witch) from the Land of Oz. It follows their relationship through opposing viewpoints and personalities, the Wizard's corruption, and eventually Elphaba's fall from grace.

The Book of Mormon

"The Book of Mormon" has been on Broadway since March 2011. It's also won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical. "The Book of Mormon" is a musical comedy and, because of its box office sales and positive critical response, is considered one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all-time.

Eugene O'Neill Theatre
@selma
"The Book of Mormon" follows two mormon missionaries as they head to a remote Ugandan village and attempt to preach their faith. However, the Ugandan villagers have more to worry about - such as sickness, famine, child abuse, and famine - than listening to them. One of the most successful musicals of all time.

Aladdin

"Aladdin" opened in March of 2014 and is based off the 1992 Disney movie of the same name. This musical brings back three songs that were written for the original film but not used, and adds four brand-new songs written for the musical. This production won both a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award.

New Amsterdam Theatre
@selma
"Aladdin" was the very first musical I saw on Broadway and is, thus, very close to my heart. I've always loved the story of Aladdin, but with the new songs, the beautiful costumes, and the fun dance numbers, this was hands-down one of my favorite shows on Broadway. This musical adaptation of the story of "Aladdin" features three songs that were cut from the original film, and four brand-new songs written for the musical.

Hamilton

"Hamilton" is one of my favorite musicals of all time. It opened August of 2015 and won 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, a Grammy Award, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Richard Rodgers Theatre
@selma
"Hamilton" is one of my favorite musicals of all time! It is a sung and rapped musical that follows the life path of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers, from when he fought in the American Revolution, to his death early in America's history.

Other Exciting Current Musicals

Shucked

"Shucked" opened on Broadway earlier this year (April 2023), and instantly became a massive hit. Not only did "Shucked" receive a positive critical response, but it also received nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

Nederlander Theatre
@selma
"Shucked" tells the story of Maizy and Beau, as they postpone their wedding due to their corn-loving town's blighted corn crop. This hilarious story follows Maizy as she travels to Tampa, FL and meets a conman who goes back home with her, but not with the best of intentions. Overall, this musical is hilarious. If you want a good laugh, I highly recommend

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Filled with magic, illusions, and stage wizardry, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," has won several Tony Awards and has received positive reviews from critics. However, the response from the Harry Potter fandom has been quite polarized. Some fans thought that the characterizations and the dialogue were spot on, while some believe that certain choices made by some of the characters were not quite in line with the arc of the characters in the book. The only way to determine for yourself, however, is to watch the musical!

Lyric Theatre
@selma
This musical takes place nineteen years after the seventh Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It follows Harry Potter and his son, Albus Severus Potter as Albus heads off to his first year in Hogwarts. I enjoyed "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" as a musical theater lover. As a Harry Potter fan, however, it's hard for me to place this story in the Harry Potter canon, but I still think it's worth seeing.

New York, New York

"New York, New York" is a brand-new musical that opened on Broadway in April of 2023. Despite mixed reviews, it did receive nine Tony Award nominations. It received one of those, for Best Scenic Design of a Musical.

St. James Theatre
@selma
"New York, New York" is loosely based on the 1977 film of the same name. While reviews were mixed, I've been told by word of mouth that if you are a creative person trying to make it in a creative industry (bonus points if you're trying to do it in New York City), then this is a show that you would, in fact, enjoy.

Back to the Future: The Musical

"Back to the Future: The Musical" premiered on Broadway in June of 2023. It is based off the 1985 film of the same name. It features songs that are well-known from the "Back to the Future" films, including "The Power of Love" and "Johnny B. Goode." Even though it is a new production to Broadway, it has received generally positive reviews after its West End run (think British Broadway). Many agreed that this was a good homage to the original film.

Six

"Six" originally showed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival before eventually moving to the West End and, finally, in 2020, coming to Broadway. It has positive critical response across the board and even won a Tony Award for Best Original Score. "Six" is based off the six wives of Henry VIII

Six on Broadway
@selma
"Six" tells the story of the six wives of Henry VIII, but through the medium of a pop concert. Most people I know who have seen "Six" really enjoyed it, so this is probably a great, safe bet for those who aren't used to musicals.

Things to Do Around the Theaters

Museum of Broadway
@selma
I absolutely loved the Museum of Broadway! Not only is there lots to learn about the history of Broadway and its changes over the decades, but they also have genuinely wonderful and interactive exhibits (and lots of Instagram photo opportunities!) Tickets can be up there in price, depending on the time slot you get them for, but if you are a fan of musical theater its completely worth it.

Magnolia Bakery - Rockefeller Center
@selma
Magnolia Bakery is one of my favorite sweet spots in the city (and I'm willing to brave the throng of tourists to get there). Their staple is their Banana Pudding, which you must try! Also, they offer a new, limited edition pudding flavor each month that you can also try out.

Times Square
@selma
Times Square is worth seeing at least once it your life. With all the big lights and billboards, and the cooky characters that end up there, Times Square lives up to its "busiest intersection in America" title. I think it's more impressive at night, but it's up to you. You wouldn't miss out on anything if you went during the day. In and around Times Square are also a lot of flagship stores such as the M&M Store, Krispy Kreme, Hershey's Chocolate World, and the Disney Store. Note of caution: There are lots of people walking around in character costumes in Times Square - if you take a picture with them, they will expect payment. So be weary of that.

Ellen's Stardust Diner

This is the place to go if you are a massive musical theater fan. Have you seen the viral videos of the waiters and waitresses who perform Broadway songs for the whole diner while simultaneously doing their server job? Yeah. This is that place.
