7 Restaurants in Queenstown & what to order

Living in Queenstown for the past five years makes me practically a local. Here are 7 of my top places to eat, complete with what to order, because if you're going to do it, you've got to do it right! These are crowd-pleaser recommendations, suitable for all budgets, and my usuals. If you're looking for high-end cuisine options, check out my Luxury Queenstown guide. Disclaimer - I'm American with a love for authentic Mexican and New York City bagels… which neither exist here… but I promise you'll like these places! I'm pescatarian-inclined but have recommendations for all eaters. Okay let’s get on with it already…

The Boatshed Cafe

Breakfast: Chorizo Scramble

Located along Frankton Marina, it's one of the best places to go for breakfast. Amazing views of the Remarkables, right on the water. Dog-friendly, not that you have one. The chorizo scramble is the only dish I get, and you can sub the pork chorizo for mushrooms if you're veggie.

Ramen Ramen

Dinner: Spicy Prawn in Tokyo Broth

Tucked away in an alley in the center of town, this Japanese counter-service ramen place is amazing. I probably go here once a week. You must get the Tokyo broth; it's spicy and amazing, and whenever I've ventured off, I've been annoyed I didn't go for the spicy Tokyo shrimp ramen, add pork and egg or any toppings if you'd like. So delicious!

Fergbaker

Pies & Baked Goods

Honestly, Ferg does live up to the hype. I prefer not to wait in the burger line and usually go for the bakery; they have a ton of great options, and it's all really good. My non-pie recommendations would be the Black Bean Quinoa Wrap or the Breakfast Burrito. Pie flavors rotate, but you can't go wrong with a classic mince and cheese or pork belly. The brownie is very large and decadent, almost mousse-like in the middle. Their famous 'Boston crème donuts' taste like air and are nothing like a true (american) Boston cream donut.

Great pies and cabinet food, the quinoa black been baguette is my favouite. Their brownie is to-die-for and they are known for the Boston creme donut (but I find it too light and lacks flavour).

Slow Cuts

Dinner: Jack'n'Yack

Located in Arrowtown, this is a great spot for dinner. It's usually quick, not too expensive, and casual with seating inside, outside, and at the bar. The Jack'n' Yack is an off-menu order of their chicken burger with an extra chicken patty, jalapeño salsa, and cheese. I usually get their salads with chicken because I'm obsessed with the dressing, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The chicken wings are kind of weird, but pretty on par with wings anywhere in Queenstown.

Kinross Winery

Lunch: Mushroom Pizza

If you're planning to visit the wineries in Gibbston, which you totally should, you'll probably end up at Kinross for lunch. They have great pizzas and sharing food, as well as wines from boutique vineyards in the area — Coal Pit Wines are my all time favorite. We never leave without getting the mushroom truffle pizza and the truffle fries (gluten free crust is even good too).

11th Avenue

Breakfast: Salmon Pide Salada

Pizza: Uncle Joe or Rocket Man

Located in Lake Hayes is 11th Avenue by Franks. They have a few different locations around town, but this is by far the best for vibes, with a view up to Coronet Peak and a big outdoor area. This place is great for a casual breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu; it's all pretty decent, but the vibes make it list worthy.
