🦁 A Rescue Centre, Not Just a Zoo
Unlike conventional zoos, Zoo de Castellar is a private initiative that has been rescuing and rehabilitating animals since 1998, officially opening to the public in 2002. The centre was founded to help animals confiscated from illegal trafficking and other dangerous situations, providing them with a safe and caring environment. Many of these animals had no one to care for them, making the zoo their only chance for survival.
From majestic big cats like lions and tigers to playful monkeys, lemurs, parrots, and reptiles, the zoo is home to a fascinating variety of species. Many of them have heartbreaking stories but are now thriving thanks to the dedication of the zoo’s caretakers.
🤲 A Unique, Hands-On Experience
One of the most special aspects of Zoo de Castellar is the opportunity to interact with some of the animals. Under supervision, visitors can gently feed birds, pet lemurs, or even hold certain reptiles. This level of interaction makes the experience far more immersive than a traditional zoo visit.
For an extra €1, you can purchase a feeding bag, which allows you to hand-feed some of the friendlier animals, making for some truly special moments.

🌍 The Mission: Conservation Through Connection
The zoo’s philosophy is built on creating a natural and unforgettable bond between visitors and animals. Unlike traditional zoos where animals are viewed from a distance, here, you can get closer and truly connect with the wildlife. This interactive approach helps raise awareness about conservation, making every visit not just entertaining but also educational.
⏳ How Much Time Do You Need?
