Key West on a Long Weekend
Rhonda Glisson (Time Travel)
Key West is Florida's most Southern point, and only 90 miles North of Cuba. Key West is Florida’s irreverent paradise, a blend of history, climate, natural beauty, cultural diversity, architecture. At night on Duval St, it is party central. Put away your inhibitions and shyness and join the fun. Key West is a very walkable town, but if you really want to experience all there is to see, rent a scooter for your entire trip. Trust me, it's a blast.
I decided to take a long weekend solo to Key West. What a fun town to chill, explore and party in. I tried to hit all the well known sites during the day, and some great bar and grills at night. Mission accomplished. Mallory Square at sunset is not to be missed. Also, if it's pristine beaches you are wanting to experience, KW might not be the place for you. There is only one public beach (Smather) that has 1/2 a mile of white sand that is worth spending time at (in my opinion). This guide will lead you to all the best places to hit up while you're in Key West.

Duval Street
@rhondaglisson
Duval St is the main drag of downtown Key West and the place you will want to thoroughly explore. There are shops, restaurants, bars, and other attractions. Plan to wander and explore for hours, till late into the night if you desire. Trust me, the fun in KW lasts WAY into the night.

Seven Mile Bridge
@rhondaglisson
The Seven Mile Bridge is a "have to do it at least once" experience. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is part of the Overseas Highway in the Keys. If you want to drive to Key West, this is your only route. Water for as far as the eye can see.

Margaritaville - Key West
@rhondaglisson
Any true Parrothead will make this a destination all by itself. Jimmy Buffett's original Margaritaville is all you hope it will be. Learn the beginnings and hear stories of how Margaritaville came to be. Of course, you have to get a Margarita while you're here. Don't miss the Volcano Nachos either--SO good.

Key West Lighthouse
@rhondaglisson
The current lighthouse opened in 1848 with a woman as its Keeper; nearly unheard of during the 19th century. I got there too late in the day to climb to the top but I can only imagine what a fabulous view you would have. Get there before 4:30pm (latest time to climb to the top) and visit the museum and take the climb.

Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center
@rhondaglisson
I stumbled on the Discovery Center while out cruising on my scooter, and boy am I glad I did. What a totally cool place. And the best part, it's totally free to go in--almost unheard of in KW. Lots of hands on and interactive exhibits. Adults and kids will both love this place.

Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A.
@rhondaglisson
No trip to Key West is complete without having your picture taken here at the iconic Southernmost Point in the Continental United States buoy. The buoy was placed here in 1983.

Capt Tony’s Saloon
@rhondaglisson
Talk about your legendary places in KW, Captain Tony's is one of the top. Most agree it was built in 1851/52 with so much history to tell--not all true, but makes great stories, maybe, who knows, could be truth in there somewhere. It's almost for certain that Ernest Hemmingway spent an incredible amount of time at Captain Tony's. Even stories of hauntings abound. A dive bar at it's finest. Be sure to stop by for a drink and check out the vibes for yourself. I am attaching a link with the history.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Rhonda Glisson (Time Travel)
I am a traveler who loves to research and a researcher who loves to travel. I spend untold hours, days and even weeks researching my next destination. I pick destinations that peak my interest--most are ocean or wildlife related. One was taking off to Churchill, MB, at the bottom of the Arctic Circle, for the annual Beluga Whale migration--all by myself. That's just me, I do most of my traveling solo. I also love photography and have my camera with me every step of the way. I spent most of my life living in Georgia, but now I live in the gorgeous Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.
