Road Trip Itinerary for Germany

This day is dedicated to freely exploring. Whether your flight gets in early morning or late at night, be sure to stay up until it's time for bed to avoid jet lag. This day is dedicated to exploring the area around your lodging.

One of the most beautiful things about Berlin is how walking-friendly it is. Public transportation is also very reliable and convenient. 

Morning - Purchase tickets for the Berlin Wall directly in the website

Afternoon - Go to lunch near Checkpoint Charlie. Take the Metro from the Berlin Wall Memorial to Charlie's Beach. 

There are a ton of restaurants, cafes, and fast-food dining options in this area. A notable restaurant that has a fun experience is Charlie's Beach.

Afternoon - Make your way from Checkpoint Charlie to Brandenburg Gate. This is only a 20-minute walk. Along the way, you will pass the "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe." This is a very solemn memorial and worth the extra few minutes to pay respect.

Brandenburg Gate is a free attraction filled with history. Around the area is also a plethora of souvenir shops.

Afternoon - From Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag Building is only a five-minute walk. This is a highly encouraged attraction. While it is still a fully functional government, it is a beautiful building and a staple site of the Berlin culture.

Evening - The dinner recommendation is incredibly close to the Reichstag Building. It's authentic German cuisine at a restaurant called, "Bier Genuss im Hopfingerbrau am Brandenburg Tor." 

Morning - Visit Alexanderplatz. This is a very historic center and worth the visit for history lovers. It was rebuilt, post-war with modern buildings and a TC Tower.

Afternoon - Head to East Craft Beer Restaurant & Bar for lunch. This is only a ten-minute walk from Alexanderplatz. This will be near the Berlin Cathedral which is the next stop. 

Afternoon - Visit the Berlin Cathedral. Be sure to buy tickets online and in advance.

Afternoon - The next stop is the Gendermanmarkt. This is only a 15-minute walk from the Berlin Cathedral. Gendermanmarkt is a historical market square in Berlin featuring French and German churches and the Berlin Concert Hall. 

Evening - Within walking distance of the market is another authentic German restaurant for dinner. This is called, "Lutter & Wegner."

There are a variety of different ways to travel around Germany. I personally enjoy taking the train. It tends to be a faster and more cost-efficient mode of transportation. The average train ride from Berlin to Cologne is roughly 5 hours and costs around $70. There are other modes of transportation such as the bus and flying that have the possibility to be cheaper. It's important to keep all of your options open.

Early Morning - Meet at the train station and board train for Cologne.

Late Afternoon - The first stop here is the Romisch-Germanisches-Museum. This museum is an archaeological museum that has a large collection of Roman artifacts.

Late Afternoon - This cathedral is a beautiful stop in the heart of Cologne. Surrounded in this area are a ton of shops and restaurants. This is a perfect time to shop for souvenirs and take in the architecture. 

Evening - Head to Brauhaus Sion for dinner. This is a gastropub in the heart of Cologne that offers authentic German food and a phenomenal beer selection. 

Morning - Head to Cologne Chocolate Museum. This museum is multilevel and goes through the evolution of Chocolate making. It is a modern experience right on the water with spectacular views.

Afternoon -  Make your way to Old Market Square. This is a historical market square in Cologne known for its cafe, culture, and carnivals.

Afternoon - If you need another recommendation to eat before getting on the train for Berlin, Brauerie zur Malzmuhle. This is a brewpub known for its authentic beer hall.

Evening - Hop back on the train and head for Munich. This is roughly a four and half hour trip and costs around $75.

Evening - Leaving to head back to the train station is a short walking distance from Lowenbraukeller. It is roughly a 4-hour train ride back to Berlin. This costs around $75.

Morning - This will be a solemn morning, but it's important to remember and pay respects to all of the victims. This stop is very hard for most, but an experience you would never regret. This stop is at Dachau Concentration Camp. 

Afternoon - Make your way back to Munich and head to an amazing Bavarian restaurant for some lunch. 

Afternoon - After lunch, you will be right in the heart of Marienplatz which is the cultural heart of Munich. This area is surrounded by shops and restaurants.

Morning - Head to Nymphenburg Castle to experience one of the most premiere royal palaces in all of Europe.

Afternoon - There is one last stop in Munich before making your way back to Berlin and that is at Lowenbraukeller. This restaurant can be reached by metro in 25 minutes or 10 minutes by car from the palace. This restaurant was used as a substitute site for the anniversaries of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, after the 1939 assassination attempt of Adolf Hitler.

Cologne is a 2,000-year-old city known for its gothic architecture and reconstructed old town. Its cathedral is known for being the largest Gothic church in Nothern Europe.
