Tokyo: Vegan Survival Guide
DISCLAIMER - always check the ingredients list as companies can change ingredients without notice!! Also, due to labelling laws in Japan, certain ingredients like Bonito flakes (fish powder) can be omitted from the ingredients list if it is in a small enough amount. Therefore, sometimes it is difficult to tell if something is truly "vegan", but I will note any uncertainty on any items.
Important phrases
A lot of places in Tokyo are English-speaker-friendly, but I have included some language tips for complete beginners! I have tried to make the language as simple as possible and prepare you for what you might hear.
Supermarkets/ Convenience stores(Konbini) :
- Welcome - Irasshaimase! (いらっしゃいませ!)
You will hear this as you walk into any shop and maybe if the store clerk passes you in the store. There is no real response to this it is more of a formality. But if you're like me and feel weird not acknowledging it at all you can smile and nod.
- Would you like a bag? - Fukuro ni oiresimasu ka?(ふくろにおれしますか)
